Just a vector simplificaiton vexel. Used G'MIC's Paint and Segmentation presets for pre-processing before using Autotrace to create the vector and copied result on top of the pre-procssing result. Click on the image for the hirez. :)

Very unique. I like the colors you used.
That seems to be almost a posterizing effect?

Thanks Rod; just got in the mood to doing vexels again after all the earlier discussion concerning Autotrace and Potrace. Also did this one earlier: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read. ... e=37796809

That is phenominal! Vexels?? I'm having a brain spasm and can't think what you mean.

Ok. I used the G'mic filter on one of my images, sort of the way outlined. I saved the image and used the Autotrace online feature to create the .svgz file and loaded it into inkscape. I have tried to export the image to a png file, but Inkscape keeps crashing. (I'm trying on an old XP machine as my super machine is in for repairs again). I even tried copying the image to the clipboard, but again Inkscape keeps crashing. I sooooo want to try this technique!

Can you attach it here? I can bring it up in Inkscape and save it as a png for you. You will have to zip it as I doubt that Gimp Chat will allow you to attach a svgz file.

A Vexel is the bitmap equivalent of a vector PM. GIMP can open SVG files directly so I just drag the SVG file right not top of the bitmap (make sure you set the dpi to 72 or the image will be scaled when you port it into GIMP). As a side note, I posted my Autotrace batch file here.

Also, I do appreciate you comments O. :)

I'm on my phone right now, but will see if Gimp will pull it up for me, a little later.

Hi,
That is a great rendering. So great that I tried to improve the 'Painting' filter in the plug-in, to get something close.
This is not as good as what you obtain, but not so far anyway :)
Thanks again for you great experiments on Gimp Chat, it gives me so much ideas everyday to improve the G'MIC plug-in, that is really valuable for me ! :clap :clap :tyspin

Cheers,

David.

Liked your vexels so much, Lyle, I tried to make one myself.

Original photo here:

My result, using G'MIC, Autotrace, and GIMP (needs more thickness):
