Graechan, this information me was super helpful!
I was getting empty results.

A small detail unnoticed. Thx for the clarification.

Currently you must make a rectangular selection before running the plug-in.
Do you still have a problem if you leave the height and width at 500, and select a small (100 x 100) section of a jpg opened in GIMP, and then run the plug-in?

Now I'm able to use the script without problems.
Graechan and elfnor, thx! :tyspin

Sallyanne, I love yours cuz it reminds me of a lot of embroidery I did and I call that the Satin stitch which works very well on text and stems etc.

OK; figured out how this one works. Helped that I had a similar excercise with Poincare Disks a while back. Used the p6m to create the seamless tile by strategically cropping. The jpeg's just a 1000pxX1000px fill. Again, thanks for the python plugin. :)

Elfnor the Symmetry group 'pmm' does nothing.
Entering my own 'bdpq string' had no effect, shouldn't any thing entered in 'bdpq string' take precedance over the 'symmetry group' option,
it is this part I'm vague about

input image with 100x100 selection↓

Menu settings↓

Result↓ (where's my q's?)

Edit found my q's

Used Pic-Pak to fill the target before re-running p4m this time. This is a crop to make it a seamless tile. :)

Elfnor at the start of the plugin could you remake the incoming selection so that it's width and height
is at least half the width and height set in the menu, using the same offsets

Graechan, I'm not sure what you mean.

If the user has selected for example, a 50 by 70 pixel rectangle in the original image and in the dialog leaves the width and height and height at 500, what do you want to happen?

If this example dosen't work can you give us another.

Elfnor

Quick tut on how I used this gem. It matters not if square or rectangle. First start with arbitrary size (in this case 1024X768) transparent layer. Now make a selection (this case, I did a circular selection).

Now run the preset; you'll, of course, get a blank result (disgard) but you will also get a new selection. Do selection to path.

Now deselect, fill stuff withing the path are (you can also choose to place symmetrical object at center edge of where the facets are that will reflect but this requires a good eyeball) and then you get the following new target:

Now this is your new target:

Now do path to selection and re-run the plugin. Choose a different size if you like; I choose 2000X2000

Thanks Lyle that is what I was trying to get at, the selected part of the image is not necessarily the part that is used but your solution is great.I guess that's why they pay you the big bucks

Beautiful floral pattern as well

Thank you Lyle, you make what look to be difficult be easier. At least one can understand the behaviour of the outcome. :tyspin

That's a clever way of getting just what you want in the selection.

One early idea for the plugin, for the symmetries with non-rectangular cells, was to get the user to define the initial cell with a path on the image. The plug-in would then "tidy up" this inital rough path to be a perfect equilateral traingle or kite shape etc. as required, and use that to make a selection to make the new image. I rejected this as difficult to explain to the user, "What's a kite shape?", and while "tidying up" the users path sounds easy, the implementation was not straightforward.

Elfnor

PS. Can I add that method to my docs when (hopefully this weekend) I write a little more on how you can use the plugin?

Elfnor I'm sure Lyle won't mind as the technique he used creates fantastic patterns
