i wrote a simple script to automate this glass ball effect.
here's the script (will available under Script-Fu/Create New/Glass ball)

I like to make this effect glass ball following the tutorial as I did at My Island
The process and the result pleases me more.
But the script is great for instant results and quick edits (just one click) :bigthup

Bit of cheating but as I happen to have a few opaque blue glass balls about took these photos on holiday, gives you an idea of the outcomes.
