That won't affect the Linux version will it Graechan? I don't know if anyone else has tried it yet. Not working for me unless I am doing something wrong.

Yep Molly your probably doing something wrong :teeth

Your line-art has gaps, fix these and have patience and it will work

Nice Graechan, but in your example, I guess using the standard bucket fill tool could have been enough :)

David I did something quick and simple to test the plugin but I,m sure the real artists on the site will post more interesting examples

Yes Graechan, I really hope so.
If only this could save time to artists for coloring their comics, that would be really rewarding to me.

from a pencil sketch, scanned, and cleaned up a bit, but I am deliberately leaving some lines vague and light and uncertain because that's what happens in real life sketching and the colorizer has to deal with those uncertainties.

This is the git pull I'm testing,
commit 8e8fc15007ef9f1f4d16dcbba24f1a7755ad4837
Author: ronounours <David.Tschumperle@ensicaen.fr>
Date: Mon Sep 29 22:16:15 2014 +0200

My habits run along lines similar to David Revoy - the particular hues picked during colorization are not as significant as the blocking out of particular regions. In this drawing, the regions around the shirt and neck were the trickiest for the colorizer because I hardly drew any defining lines concerning where the neck leaves off, the shirt picks up or even where the background and shirt divide.

This is a useful blocking. Not perfect, but I'm not even sure what 'perfect' is as in my own mind many regions of the drawing were ill defined; I wasn't particularly interested in drawing out the shoulders for instance. The idea, at 3:45 am this morning (EDT -4:00), was to draw something quickly, scan it, colorize it, and "email" it to a hypothetical client in about under an hour. Following hypothetical approval, then I would use the blocking as a basis of doing more painterly coloring, using the blocking layer as a source of restricting selects, per David Revoy, somewhat. So in my modus operandi, the color layers are saved out separately from the drawing, and, downstream, would function as a control layer to define various kinds of selections.

This blocking was done using three colors - a green background, blue shirt and pinkish face. The bit I had most difficulty was when I wanted to "switch among the three color points" to more carefully define the perimeters of certain regions. I started with pink, went to green, then blue. However, once I had selected blue, and decided I wished to better define the regions between the blue shirt and the pink skin, it wasn't clear to me how to revert to the previous pink and add more pink points. I could pick a new pink from the color selector, but it tended to behave as a fourth color, blocking out its own regions. Perhaps if I had noted the exact hex code of the color, I would have been home free, but I hadn't thought to do that. Perhaps some future version could have a kind of selection history (I would not dare to propose that for the current release!)

No crashes or odd behaviours. I didn't look closely at memory leaking, but in this short run, I saw nothing of the sort.

So, to summarize: :coolthup

Garry

Light dawns over Marblehead. Much of this was issue was relieved by loading a Gimp (not very big) palette file (*.gpl). something with four to eight, maybe ten entries. So I made a swatch image and defined a palette from it and was home free; I could select from that. Also the micro palette in the lower right hand corner of the color selector window. Operator error. Thank goodness I wasn't using a chain saw.

I don't know how I ended up with this cuz it kept crashing along the way, I had to edit, undo after every step, then the picture would come back, can't explain it, maybe if I used different settings on the upper right, it would have been more smooth operating.
Anyway, thank you David and I think when I get onto this better, it will be one of the best colorizing scripts out there.

Molly I asked David about this in a PM but feel it may be for coloring B&W photos, so lets give it a try

I did try it this afternoon with a picture of a baby, I got the skin okay but when I went to the hair and other parts, the colors spread away out beyond the lines.
I think there must be something wrong with my 1.6.0.1 GMIC for linux. I used the exact same settings as you did and I would open my gimp and go to the new BW plug-in, I would put my settings in and then click apply, the one color dialogue came up and I chose my color, a pinkish color for the skin and hit enter. The screen would be all filled in with smudges so I would go to edit and undo gmic, then I would hit apply again and the face and skin turned pink. I don't think it is supposed to do that. This would happen every time I changed colors and it runs into at least 2 hrs for me to do one picture like the one I posted.
I really haven't seen any results yet from anyone using Linux so maybe it is just the plug-in, I know I used all the correct settings.
So........ for now I am frustrated with it unless I get some answers from another Linux user who hasn't tried it yet. I also went into GMIC website and I no longer see the beta plug-in there anymore.
I was going to delete mine and re-install a new one but it is gone, I think.

To use the input type B&W photograph, first open a B&W image
Image
Set your Menu then select OK or Apply
Image
Then set your points
Image
press enter to receive your colored image
Image
I hope that simplifies it a bit, Note! You would normally not have black outlines on your image as it colored these on mine

Try it on a regular photo Graechan, that looks like a line art changed to black and white, that would work cuz the division lines are already there. I dunno,
