Yes its called composting - adding images together to create a different image.
That one i believe was done by our good friend Gimp Know How. :)

I've actually used Photoshop tutorials with GIMP and got a better result that I did doing the tutorial with Photoshop. Although many Photoshop layer techniques don't have a GIMP equivalent, there is always a way around it. I'd recommend at least giving them a shot.

P.S. I just joined the site to see what it was all about, and there are some pretty cool sigs on that forum. Worth checking out.
