Hi all

I have a problem with fonts in GIMP. I´ve read some threads about it here, but hinting, starting big and then shrinking size as suggested makes little difference.
The letters and numbers remain "pixelized" and ugly no matter the font.
I´ve tried importing fonts not already in GIMP -doesnt help.

The letters GIMP (2.8) itself use (as in File, Colours, Tools etc) are way better.

Cant imagine it cant do better.
Anybody knows how to?

(And why are GIMP lettering by default of "unpublishable" quality?)

Ill be thankful for any help .

Which exact version of GIMP? 2.8.14 ?

I presume you have your image in RGB mode and have the Antialiasing option checked?:

If you are using Gimp's Text tool to prepare your text, using a standard font and have antialiasing turned on, there should not be any visible pixellation when viewed at normal magnification (100%) or lower.
If you are getting visible pixellation under these circumstances there must be something wrong ..either with your Gimp installation or the way you're using it!
If so, please tell us
- your Operating System (eg. Windows 7, 64 bit)
- precise version of Gimp (eg. 2.8.14 - if in doubt check under Help>About)
- precisely how you are using the Text Tool.

And, BTW, text produced by Gimp is not "unpublishable" ..it is of quite sufficient quality for many purposes such as newsletters, cards and even some web applications ..but it may not be to the standard required of high-resolution printing techniques such as book and album-cover printing ..but for those applications you should really be using vector graphics anyway.

Is the image saved as an XCF? Are you having this problem in a Text (vector) layer and/or a normal (raster) layer?

RGB V
Antialiasing V
saving in .jpg
GIMP 2.8.6
Windows 8

I´m not sure about the layer question. I use the text-tool from the toolbar to put text on a jpg image.

The text in paynekj´s post is way better than I have managed!

(I´ll bet GIMP text isnt unpublishable if it works as as it ought to, but as it came ....)

Thanks a lot for answers :)

Try up-grading to Gimp 2.8.14 and see if you have more luck with that.

At this point I think it would be helpful to see a screen-capture similar to mine, with the tool options visible.

I think you need to have 5(?) posts on the forum before you can add an attachment. So If you could make a few more posts, then post a screen-cap back in this thread.

Also, could you try doing what I did:- create a new blank 600x400 image and put some text on it. Does it look pixelated?

And I was :ninja by jontait and the suggestion to move up to 2.8.14 is a good one as there have been a few issues with text on the way to 2.8.14

FYI - Offsite links require 5 posts. Attachments are OK.

Note that our eyes are very sensitive to text edges, so JPEG compression artifacts are much more visible on text than on photos(*). So you would have to use rather high quality settings (>=90).

How is the image used? Printed? Part of a web page? If the latter is the page resizing the image, however slightly?

(*) JPEG (Joint Photography Experts Group) is mean to compress photographs, and not pictures with computer generated graphics.

So, I saw this post because I was having a font quality problem in output, and done of the suggestions fixed my problem. Instead, at some point I decided to check the Mode of the file, and it turned out it was indexed, thus throwing away the subtle shades that make edges aliased. Changing the Mode to RGB fixed the problem.
