Anmal - well sometimes life gives you a little 'reality check' and lets you know that you still have something to learn!

Today I failed miserably in executing your tutorial because it revealed that I had some severe misconceptions about GIMP,
its functions and the way it performs.
So, one hell of a learning exercise for me and I will try again tomorrow.
But the positive side is that one should never stop learning!! :hi5

That's the spirit OMG!

oldmangrumpy: you're so right! one should never stop learning and i thought i knew a lot about gimp when i joined gimp chat but soon found i had just been nibbling a bit in one corner of the big gimp chocolate bar :) . but i have to say that if you have problems with the dollface effect it may very well be the tutorial causing it! so far i've seen lots of downloads but only one result posted, and i know i'm not the world's best tutorial writer, so it's not exactly a total surprise if i've confused you. what exactly are you having problems with?

Anmal - of course it was not your tut; mea culpa ... my own problem.

What happened was that I have only ever used 'crop to selection' under the 'image' sub menu (i.e. right click on image>image>crop to selection) to finalise an image.

I did not realise at the time of doing your tut that ALL LAYERS were then cropped, not just the one I was working on. I gave up in disgust and rapped myself over the knuckles when I realised there is a similar function under the 'layer' sub menu.

oldmangrumpy: that's actually good to know - i didn't think of the crop-to-selection function showing up in two menus, but i can easily guide people by telling them which menu to look in :).

Issabella - thank you, but this site, for many of us anyway, is a wonderful example of a 'true co-operative'.

oldmangrumpy: yaaay, you did it :)! :hi5 looks good, and the make up was a fun effect. but what do you mean, no glass and no paisleys? everything gets better with glass and paisleys on it! :hoh next time i make one of these i'll give the dollface some paisley tattoos and a glass tiara just to prove my point...

but please, people, tell me if i messed this tutorial up - what can i do to make the steps understandable?

Erisian: You know it's lovely, so I won't say it again. You did the dollfacing thing to perfection, but what I like best is the drama of a dark fairy against that spring flower background. I sort of want to now what she's up to.

Had no idea there was a tut for your dollfaces, that's fantastic thanks much AnMal! :coolthup
Isn't that Finnish model Suvi Koponen in your tutorial :hehe
Did so far only part 1, but I want to share this. The top and the lower part of head were done roughly like in the tut, with perspective tool.
But the eyes I copied on separate layers from the original layer and used filters/distortion/lens distortion twice.
First main and zoom only, on the second round shift and edge was also used to get the eyes straight and directed correctly.
I think this helps also with eye brows and possible hair strands.
Then I moved the eyes bit lower and just cleaned around carefully with eraser.

First dollface, not totally happy working with the warp tool drives me insane.

Nidhogg: OOooooooh!!! That's perfection, that is! Love the work you did on her skin, the result is really doll-like. Thanks for the tip with the eyes, I see it worked great on your image. I'll definitely have to try it. There was a photoshop tutorial that I tried to follow first time I ever made a dollface and they used the PS equivalent of the lens distortion - I don't remember why I changed it, probably had problems finding the right settings. these days I use Iwarp after resizing to much the same effect.
And it's indeed your countrywoman in the image :). I love her face, it's so unique.
