OK, I guess it's time to set a specific thread for this ongoing filter.
It is derived foundamentally from Lyle's tutorial on this subject.
Then I added some "heretical" lateral thinking (and Lyle, from his side, has changed his procedure), thus now there is a divergence (if Lyle wants me to drop his name from the filter's name because it doesn't implement his current thoughts, I will do it, but I'm still convinced his initial procedure is the ground, so IMO the name is appropriate).
If someone is so kind to perform testing, I'm grateful.
Here the current release, which supersedes the two previous posts (in any case the name is a bit changed so there is no "replacement" forced).
Warning: this version makes use of my ancillary filter modLCS, already published when I posted the CrystallizeN filter. If you didn't download already pls do it before running this one.
Enjoy (hopefully...)

edit: replaced with correct version, sorry Kimba

edit2: a test made with a big image revealed an error (because the G'MIC 3d elevation filter used inside accepts only a maximum width/height = 2048)
I posted an amended version on page 2
It has now been tested by Issabella, so i drop the one here and replace with the latter one.

here it is, please re-download if not yet done
---------- removed -----------------------------
note: Pat told me that the version put here last night isn't correct (I don't know why)
thus, removed and substituted again

here it is
---------- removed ------------------------------
new edit
TheWarrior discovered that the square sizes did not change: my typo error.
Thus I removed and reinserted with the amended version, tested by TheWarrior

a usage note: results can differ a lot depending on the number set as "divisor", so play until you find the most appropriate value for your image (the value ranges from 1 to 8, default 3)
You may always set Colour=yes, because to see the result in Gray it's enough to set off visibility of the top layer.

Just honored that you wanted my name included, Diego, but your effort's your wonderful creation. Just wish I knew how to code (and had a desire to do so). :)

I'm getting an error that it can't find LCS. Had a look at the filter. It seems to be calling a scm LCS instead of the py that I have.

Dinasset - thought I would play with your new script to see what happens and you asked for testers.

No problems at all after 10 or 12 attempts and you are right, results can differ widely with the settings. First image below is with settings close to default whilst second is with settings at minimum.

Your challenge is to tell me who is in the photo!! :hehe

Nice! I set the contrast to 50 and sampling to 7. I love the rolled screen effect from this filter.

Dinasset: I tried your Wireframe plugin but got this error warning and it quit working. I tried again but got the same thing. Attached is photo and screenshot of the error. I did downsize the photo first as it was quite large.

try with a downsized version of the image, maybe the call performed at that line of code tries to enter a too big value for a parameter; I would really appreciate you if you could:
- dowsize the image to one half (1000*1500)
- if you succeed in getting the outcome tell me
I will try to find the limit in size now supported.
Thanks a lot

using the image you posted I could run the filter, the output (using defaults) is the following:

Mountain%20Ram-WIREFRAME_LYLE_default.jpg
Mountain%20Ram-WIREFRAME_LYLE_default.jpg [ 3.06 MiB | Viewed 1217 times ]

is THIS the real image size you tried with? (edit: you wrote that image has been downsized before inserting it in the post; didn't notice before, could you try whether also in your system this size gives results? thanks)

checked G'MIC: max size accepted is 4096*4096, because the filter uses the double of the real image size DO NOT USE IMAGES greater tham 2048*2048 (for now: later I will amend the filter to perform automatically the required downsizing, thanks)

Dinasset: I downsized the picture by half before running the filter so it was much less than the parameters you gave me. Tried several times. I did just try another picture and had no difficulty at all. I will try the Ram picture again.
Here are my successful tries. Done on default. Had no problem and really like the outcome. Thank you.

Pat, thanks!
Try this amended version of the filter: it performs automatic rescaling.
Let me know
