Hello all!
My first post here! :)
I wanted a little help to zoom on images.
Try to explain what I'd like to do.
Very often I need to select in detail an image to crop out just 1-2 pixels of the image (an example... 100x100px image... I want to crop out let's say a 2x100 vertical line on the left area of the image), doing so Select -> Crop image to selection (hope these are the right commands in english UI).
My problem is that, after selection, and zooming on the left area of the image, I'm not able to zoom in the area near the border but outside of the image, to be able to select in detail the area I want to crop out; when zooming in, the border of the image gets to the border of the gimp window, so I can't pull the left selection line where needed. Actually... at times GIMP does that, but I don't understand what's the way to do it.
So... in short... I'd like to know if it's possible to zoom an area outside of the image.
I'm using the zoom-in, zoom-out feature with the mouse wheel.
Or maybe that could be a request for a new feature?
Thank you for any help.
cico :)

Why not just use the zoom tool and draw a rectangle as the zoom area

While there hold the space bar down and move the canvas around (if you want to make adjustments.

However IMHO you should be using select/crop tool options to enter values directly.

Thank you for your reply rich.
I tried your solution but I loose the selection when activating the zoom tool.
And entering values directly is not so immediate as using the mouse; zooming with the mouse is much faster and simpler.
Thank you anyway! :)

Ah..ok I did not pick up you want an active selection.

Use Alt-space and click in the canvas to move.

A quick demo https://youtu.be/ZzprPLk09LE 1.5 mins

Thank you Rich!
That's ok this way.
I think it would be nicer if it was possible to directly zoom outside of the canvas, but your solution is ok all the same.
Actually in my system I can move the canvas using the space bar only (alt not needed)... maybe it's because I'm with kde.
Anyway... it works great!
And thank you for your demo; very kind of you! :)

You could [Select] [All] then [Select] [Shrink] to make the selection easily by precise pixels.

Thank you PegLeg44,
That is not working in my case, as I usually have to crop out a very little part of the image near one of the borders and a big part on the other borders.
So using the mouse in this case is the best way to go...
Thank you for your suggestion.

Have you tried enabling Snap To Canvas Edge, when making your selection?
