Hi,

I have some files i need to work with in GIMP, but the files are of the .AI type. How can I convert them into another format for working in GIMP?

Convert them to PDF or EPS format then Gimp can open them.
Then just re-open them in Adobe illustrator and re-save as ai format.

Using Robs Shellout script you may be able to just import them to Adobe Illustrator too.

I am not sure about AI opening in Inkscape i never tried. :)
I can't get GS (Ghost Script) to work on my machine so i cant open EPS in Inkscape anyways.

Hi,

So, can I simply replace the current extension with .pdf or .eps to convert them to pdf or eps, respectively?

No you can try to open them AS PDF or EPS in Gimp. You may not be able to though.
Gimp reads the information inside an image to open it.Try opening the AI extension and see if Gimp recognizes it.
I do not think it does. You would either have to open the AI in Adobe Illustrator and convert it from there (save as).
Or maybe they will open in Inkscape. Then you can save the AI opened in Inkscape to EPS or PDF format.Actually Gimp can open and save vector (SVG) images also.Inkscapes work-file (editing) format.

You can not simply change the extension and open it in Gimp.It has to be converted.
You may be able to change the AI extension to PDF and open it in Adobe Reader or Gimp that way too.
Right click the AI file open with choose adobe reader.See if that works.

I own Contenta Converter and i can't open AI files with that and it opens and converts just about anything.
Adobe has kept that format pretty secret. But i have heard if you can change the extension to PDF Adobe reader will open it.

well there you go. :)
Thanks Gms9810

By the way how did you set up Ghost Script to open EPS in Inkscape?
I have added the path and everything and still no EPS in Inkscape nor PDF for that matter.
I can open them in Gimp though.
