That means you didn't successfully use color to alpha with the target color as black on those 3 layers. In the tutorial he calls it color to transparency. Those 3 layers also need to be blurred as he indicates on step 12. And then they need their opacity levels adjusted as indicated in step 14. In step 13 he recommends we just slightly nudge those same 3 layers again with Colors - Curves. To slightly darken the edges a bit.

Thank you, mahvin. I put a black stroke around it because the white didn't do well on a white bg.

thanks Mahvin, I am going back and starting right from scratch. yes, I found that step confusing also. I think I only did that on the one layer, not sure...

I made a gradient and used it instead of doing steps 15 through 18 in the tutorial. I've attached the gradient if you want it.

When you use the gradient make the repeat Sawtooth wave and check adaptive super sampling.

When using the gradient start in the upper left corner (or right one) and drag down a short distance toward the opposite corner. Keep experimenting to get the slant and width of stripes like you want.

Also, if you would like a different stripe pattern, you can use Triangular wave.

Thank you mahvin. I'm thinking if I could make spokes like on those mints in the image, they could probably be warped like the stripes on the letters. Have it in my mind. While it's percolating I'm working on a candy cane with the three colored stripe gradient.

hi guys

I'm trying out this tutorial but I am stuck on some steps:
Step 11 - do I do this for all three copied text layers?
Step 13 - do I also do this for al three copied text layers?
Step 19 - here is where I really get stuck. When I use the Filters>Map>Warp selection, only the striped and white background are available as the Source. Why can't I select the blurred text layer as the source?

Thanks for your help.

Did you read back on the comments in this thread?

Step 11. Yes
Step 13. I wasn't clear on that myself, but yes I did use Curves on all 3 (try not to overdo it, though)
Step 19. Sounds like you skipped step 2. The blurred layer should be available.

There is actually a script that does this whole process that swaps out the warp mapping process for IWarp. It works pretty good, I might add.

http://www.aljacom.com/~gimp/script_fu.html (scroll to the bottom to find it)

Yes I read the comments but it still wasn't clear. Maybe I'm a bit slow.

I do have that layer from Step 2 and I did remove the Alpha Channel, but the text is inside a white rectangle surrounded by a black background. Is this supposed to be a white background? I couldn't figure out how to change it. Is this what will make the difference, because when I did Step 5 I could select the blurred layer without any problems.

That black background shouldn't be there. 90% + of the time, the failure of being able to select an image from any of the mapping options (warp, in this case) is directly related to whether or not it is the same size as the image (or fails to have or not have an alpha channel) or isn't visible in layers.

I would strongly suggest redoing step 2. Should only be blurred grey text on white background.

Can you post your xcf and maybe we (anyone who wants to help) can get to the bottom of it?

That script downloads as a .scm.txt file. I have removed the .txt extension but it wont show up in the Logos menu.

OK. I adjusted the Layer to Image size on the blurred layer so it is the same size as the other layers. Now I can select it in the Warp filter.

Thanks for your help mahvin.

The script should show up in File - Create - Logos at the top of the list somewhere as "Sweet Candy".

Hi.

I was trying this out. I usually use GIMP 2.6 still, but have 2.8 installed on my second computer. (I'm a little slow to change from what I'm used to sometimes.)

Anywho, I thought this was a really fun idea so I posted this tutorial on another forum, clarifying the unclear steps and realized that some of the readers may not use the old version of GIMP still like I do, so I tried it in 2.8. This is an old tutorial and it works well in GIMP 2.6, but there are a few changes that should be made in the process if you are using GIMP 2.8.

1. In step 5, the tutorial says to set the bump map to the following settings: "Azimuth 250, Elevation 45, Depth 50, Rest 0" This works perfectly in 2.6; however, in 2.8 if you change the X and Y offsets to 0 rather than leaving the defaults that show up in the box, your results are very odd. So leave the X and Y defaults as they are.

2. In step 7, the tutorial says to "lock the Alpha channel" before using the Gaussian blur. GIMP 2.8 does not allow this. However, it does seem that the blur stays on the alpha and doesn't spread beyond as it does in 2.6 with the alpha unlocked.

3. Step 11 in which you apply "Color to Alpha" to your three reflection layers cannot be done at this point. For some reason, in GIMP 2.8, once you do "Color to Alpha" the Gaussian blur and color curves have no effect whatsoever on the layers. You must complete steps 12 (Gaussian blur) and 13 (color curves) BEFORE setting the Color to Alpha.

Other than those three things, you should have no problem completing this tutorial in GIMP 2.8.
