I wonder if there is a way to set Gimp up with its scripts like GMIC has setup its refresh button.
A user opens Gimp - refreshes scripts all scripts are updated to whatever newer version the creator has uploaded to the refresh repository. No new update no refresh.Only updated scripts you have installed get downloaded, installed and refreshed. (the refreshing script reads your directory in users

The new scripts go into a folder in the users docs - application data/gimp-2.6/ (scripts / python/or scm)
(over-writing older versions)
This could also work for Python scripts.

Scripts are already uploaded, and updated through the registry.Couldn't Gimp just link to that for refreshing?
Their are two different directories for Python and SCM at the gimp plug-in repository right?

If downloading python scripts the refreshing script could shut down and restart gimp.

That would be very nice but I don't know how doable it would be. It would need to be set up wherever scripts are stored, like the Registry which is only one place where scripts are found.

G'MIC is in only one place and set up for refreshing scripts.

It's certainly an interesting idea, but I see too many problems. As Oregonian says, scripts come from many sources so you'd either need a directory of all scripts held somewhere, or each script could hold a link to where it's come from - which means having to establish a standard for that information in the script, something that you'd have to do for the version number as well.

I think that the registry catches most of them though.
Others would just have to be hunted down at their respective sites.
And hey a user that finds a particular script out there could try and
notify the author of the script and ask them to add it to the repository.

I think it could work if a script could be written that reads the script files in your user doc folder, checks to see if a larger version number is available in the repository, and downloads and installs overwriting those scripts.

It's something to ponder anyways. It would certainly be a nice addition to Gimps arsenal. :)

I don't think will work not even with the script listed in the registry

That because are listed but often not hosted, and even if they were a script able to parse the each script page to spot the download links, select the right version when several are present, and actually install it seems far too complex to be done

More such script or plugin will open the doors to security risks

I've done just that, with mixed responses. Mixed in that I have only contacted about 5 authors, and only 2 of them responded favorably, at least considering the option, where the other 3 said they haven't worked with the scripts in "x" amount of years and have no interest in keeping up with it, and reminded me that the script was open source and free to distribute and modify. To which I had to agree. If I could just open my brain and drop in a ton of scheme knowledge into it, matrix style, I'd be all over the updating of these scripts.

I'm still working Fencepost's beginner tutorials and recently found a new source for plug-ins (tutorials) for which I need to add to the tutorial thread somewhere in Gimp Chat.

Also different scripts are compatible with different versions of Gimp. If I modify a script myself, a refresh could trash my mods unless I change the name, and menu detail.
