I would like to "fill" some jars with different paint colors. I can find pictures of glass jars and I even found brushes of jars and bottles. But I am having trouble filling the jar with paint. If I put a layer with a blue color behind the glass jar layer, it just looks as if the glass is a colored glass instead of a clear glass. I would like the paint to have a more deep look but where it is obviously behind glass. I've attached a picture I found that should the paint in a jar where the paint looks similar to what I would like to create.

Thanks for any help
Becky

where's your picture of just a clear glass jar?
I think you could use what's shinning and what's not on it to recreate the Red or another color but look more like the red jar in your posted image.

Hi florsca. Welcome to Gimp Chat.
Try this.

1) Create a layer filled with the color you want the jar to be.
2) Create a new transparent layer and use your jar brush on it.
3) Alpha to select the jar layer.
4) Select invert and fill with white. Select > Invert again.
5) KEEPING the selection active press the delete key until you get the desired color depth.

6) Select none - new from visible
7) fuzzy select tool (make sure to feather the selection) delete the white area on the new visible layer that surrounds the jar.

I forgot to feather the selection when removing the white area. Make sure you do this.

Then its just a matter of duplicating the new jar layer and use colors>colorize to change the paint color.
Scale the jar to make it look like this.

Of course with better brushes it would look nicer. :)

Because I think the best way to simulate something is to start by looking at the real world, I put some paint in a jar and photographed it:

Notice that the base of the jar is not coloured by the paint.

I hope this helps.

I made this Mason Jar brush.
If you would like to try it.
I'll upload it to our Board index » Gimp Resources thread for you to download.
Just let me know and I'll post the brush.

Click on the thumbnail image below,
to view the example screenshot.

I also made a few improvements to the brush after taking the screenshot above.
So the thumbnail image doesn't show these improvements.

All my life, I have never thought of whether there would be a difference between a coloured jar and a jar filled with paint. It's amazing what you can learn from other people's questions.

Wow. Thanks for all the ideas and help. I have a group of yearbook students that want a paint jar on their book cover but I just haven't been able to figure out how to help them. These look like some tips and ideas that should get them something that they will like.

peynekj- thanks for the reminder of the bottom glass not having paint show. A reminder to always consider the real world if you want it to look real.

Rod- I'll try following your tutorial tonight.

Wallace- if you wouldn't mind, I'd love to try your brushes.

Thanks again for everything!
Becky

I'm missing something in your step 5. When I hit the delete key, it doesn't seem like anything is happening. Up through step 4 it appears that I am following along with the steps that you show on your gimp screenshot. I think I am doing step 6 & 7 correctly also. But I am ending up with a colored glass bottle and not getting any color depth. My end result doesn't look like yours.

Thanks

I used the mason jar brushes and instructions http://gimpchat.com/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=14732 that Wallace posted and got it to work. My problem with the steps from Rod might have been a difference in the bottle shaped brushes that I was using.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

My apologizes. You should invert the selection again before deleting (after step 4).
