Suppose I have a picture of a sofa. The sofa is two-toned. The bottom portion is black and the top portion is red.

I want to experiment with its colors. I use the PATHS tool to create a path of the bottom portion, adjusted the colors so that I would end up with a sofa that has a peach bottom and (still) a red top.

Is there a way to save the path so that whenever I open the file, I would be able to adjust the colors right away and not have to create the path all over again.

Thank you.

Export path as SVG file. Then you can import the path to use again later. :)

Save the file with an xcf extension (Gimp's native format) and the path will be saved too.

Always more then one way to skin a cat O; that's what fun. I've only played with exporting/importing SVG a few times. The .xcf method is much easier, but I wouldn't know how to copy a path from one image to another (never tried). Importing SVG should work. Guess, using the .xcf method, you could always copy another target and paste it as a layer. :)

It's pretty easy. Open the two images. Click the Paths tab in the one that has the path you want to copy, drag the path preview onto the other image. Piece o' cake.

Man; still have a lot to learn in GIMP (and I've been playing with GIMP for nearly a decade now). :)

Yes Gimp saves all paths in the Paths dialog after you create them.Save your image as an editable xcf like O said, and then all you need to do anytime you reopen it, is turn the path to a selection again and colorize it. =)
There is probably a number of other ways also.

Gimp is so versatile. =)

I just made two identical images, made a path on one image and dragged it to the other. It copied perfectly! Just another great Gimp function!

Be mindful of the dragging and dropping of paths because differences of image resolution between the images has an effect on how big or little the path will be (but hey, you can always scale it, just not sure if the path maintains its uniformity throughout). I'll have try rescaling and see what happens...

Because Import only does ABSOLUTE pixels loading...
I wrote a script to allow 3 additional load methods
RELATIVE (percentage) - scale width and height
RELATIVE WIDTH KEEP ASPECT RATIO - scale using width
RELATIVE HEIGHT KEEP ASPECT RATIO - scale using height

Path Save and Load Script for GIMP

A good idea, very often an imported svg is somewhere off the canvas.

This in linux (PClinuxOS) and Gimp 2.8.16 so must be a linux thing.
Save works and creates a paths.txt in ~/.gimp-2.8/paths/

Alas when I try and load, nothing.

Starting gimp from a terminal shows this when load is invoked.

(gimp:28555): Gimp-Actions-WARNING **: Uh-oh, no active item for the plug-in!

you have to have to have at least one path present before you can run these functions.
even if you just add an empty path as long there is at least one.

I currently don't know how to solve this problem because you shouldn't need a path present when you're just trying to load..but that's just how it works right now.

the paths.txt file is this

Path:My paths 1|800,530|99.0,87.0,99.0,87.0,99.0,87.0,550.0,372.0,549.0,373.0,548.0,374.0,242.0,397.0,242.0,397.0,242.0,397.0,472.0,119.0,473.0,119.0,474.0,119.0,0

Can you see any problems there?
