Yesterday I entered a new topic related to the "View active topics" possibility.
I'm almost sure that up to yesterday I could click on "View active topics" also when not logged in.
Since yesterday I'm obliged to login to have a look at the active topics (when entering into the site the list is the last shown for instance the evening before, thus I must login).
I did receive only a reply from animicule, who confirmed he also had to login to view.
Now I would like to hear from the moderators:
- is this a change in the interface introduced yesterday or did I do something wrong ?
- is there a possibility to come back to the previous environment?
I was used to login normally only when I had something to say, not just to see.
Thanks

It seems that this change applies to me as well.

Thank you Dinasset for your concern.
I think that Omega has made this change,
he also put the Holiday Banners into rotation.

Although these changes have been made.
None of Gimp Chat's Moderators were involved in the process.

As Moderators,
we have limited ability/permissions to effect any changes to Gimp Chat's forum environment/interface.

I'm sorry for this and I also don't know why,
nor for what reason this "View active topics" change was implemented.

Is there a possibility for one of you Moderators to talk to Omega or is he a "phantom"?

Unfortunately "phantom" is quite the appropriate moniker for him.

We (meaning all moderators),
have attempted to contact him.
To no avail...
:(

The odd thing about this,
is that on his profile,
it states that he hasn't been here since September 8th of this year.

I've sent PM's to all the moderators about this "View active topics" issue.

To date,
every PM I've ever sent to Omega has gone unanswered.

I haven't seen or heard from him at all Wallace, I see where he hasn't shown up in his profile since Sept. Some one must have changed the banners because I don't think it is an automatic thing. It is a mystery.
I see one of my Charlie Brown ones are up right now.

I will email Tux now and ask him if the banners can be activated automatically.

@dinasset I just took a photo of the top of my gimp chat page and this is what mine looks like.

Obvious Molly, you are logged-in (when Logout appears it means you are logged-in).
Log-out then reenter, and see whether you have "View active topics"

@dinasset I just logged out twice and back in. I get the same screen shot I sent in last post. I don't know why or what but when we don't have an owner that will answer the moderators mail, there isn't too much we can do, All of us mods sent him messages, we don't have the tools to change these things.

When you were in "logged-out" mode did you see the "View active topics" as it was before yesterday?
What I (and not only me) claim is exactly that now we see it ONLY WHEN WE ARE LOGGED-IN

No, when I was logged out it wasn't there. Why would anyone want to have access to those tools when they are logged out? Logged out means you shouldn' see any of those things in my opinion.

I think you should be able to see active topics logged out as this allows new users who may want to join Gimp Chat a chance to see whats new here.

Same here, "view active topics" is not there when I log in as guest (using "Private Browsing"):

PS: the only "full" admin not answering mails is how GF's demise started. Which is why gimp-forum.net has several
full-rights admins.

I totally agree with Rod, and also I think that registered users who just want to read news and not post at the moment should be able to ask for "View active topics" and -only if something is of particular interest- log in and post.

Even so, all you have to do is hit User Control Panel to find out all of your posts that you submitted (of course with this post, it will be one more; lol). :)

I agree with Ofnuts: there should be more than one full-rights admin, that would solve a lot of problems.

How do you distinguish a registered user from a guest if the registered user is not logged in?

I don't think that would be possible... If someone wants to know what is going on in a forum they should have to join, just like in any other forum. It is private to all members.

Molly, this is not a 'secret society' unless you make it so. If new potential users look at the very limited view of Gimp Chat (in the newly restricted view), I can imagine that they might not think it worth joining as there might be nothing more to see. If this forum were private I would never have joined. Free exchange of information.
I do understand why any user who wants to post should be registered. That is all too obvious nearly
anywhere.
