GIMP Version: 2.8.20
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: Windows 7 Pro - 64bit
GIMP Experience: Experienced User

List any relevant plug-ins or scripts:
Mathmap

List any ERROR messages you received:
Mathmap doesn't appear in Filters>Generic

When I was using Gimp 2.8.18, I frequently used Mathmap. I only recently tried using it in Gimp 2.8.20 and surprisingly Mathmap doesn't exist under Filters>Generic. I was wondering if anyone else had this issue?

Well if it's any consolation, I'm in Linux running Gimp 2.8.16 and can't get MathMap to run at all. From what I've seen so far, I'm not missing much, I think. I do have a Win7 x64 in a VM, but I rarely ever use it anymore.

On a side note, I checked out your images. Really good stuff for a Jersey Boy.... I'm an ex-Masshole now living in Maryland.

But seriously, Yankees? C'mon Red Sox and Pats all the way..... :lol

Hi PhotoMaster,
Could it have been an add-on that you installed?

I have GIMP2.8.20 64-bit with Mathmap and it's still there, Greg. Not sure what could be your issue unfortunately.

Greg be sure you pointed Edit>Preferences>Folders>Plug-ins to the folder you placed the 32 bit MathMap executable in.

Just out of interest which linux are you using? Over the years I usually manage to get it working, From 32 bit PClinuxOS (rpm packages) to the current 64 bit Kubuntu 16.04 (debian packages).

MathMap is looking a bit long in the tooth, and you could say that G'mic is the up-to-date equivalent. As well as lots of pre-made filters, you can create your own with its scripting language.

Going back to that spinning globe post, an equivalent for MathMap. This using Gimp 2.9.5 and the latest (as in compiled yesterday) gmic_gimp_qt and an animation filter. Plenty of parameters to keep you occupied for hours ;)

cut half the frames out for smaller size so not too smooth but as an example.

I moved mathmap.exe from
Users\Photomaster\.gimp 2.8\plug-ins to
Program Files\Gimp 2\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins

At least now I get the error message that mathmap.exe was unable to start correctly.
(both paths are present in Edit>Preferences>Folders>Plug-ins)

Then I pulled out ALL scripts and plugins, to no avail. Filters>Generic didn't even exist.

I restored all the scripts and plug-ins. I even tried changing the compatibility mode but still only get the error.

I'm at a loss.

Assuming that you have Windows 7 64 Bit and gimp 2.8.20 like me, mathmap is in a separate folder.
Here's where I have Mathmap:
Users>Mackenzie>.gimp-2.8>plug-ins>plug-ins>mathmap

After that, restart gimp and go to Edit>Preferences>Folders>Plug-ins and add it to your plug-ins folder if it's not there. Once you have it there, click OK and then restart gimp again. Once yo do that, you should see Filters>Generic>Mathmap (not greyed out) then scroll over to the 15 options that are usable and underneath the last option, there is another mathmap (that one can only be used if there is an image present on your gimp workspace). Mathmap should work.

I hope this helps. :)

Where did you get the plugin from? If you copied from a previous installation, did you get all the files?

This is what you need.

Image

Those 5 files and the share folder go in your Gimp profile plug-ins (1) and the mathmap folder with 3 files and an expressions sub-folder go in your Gimp profile (2).

If you used the windows installer, as I see it the problem is MathMap is old, 32 bit and expects Gimp 2.6
A quick try with the installer and it seems to have a mind of its own, does not matter what you enter for the installation directory, it tries for GIMP-2.0 locations.

Life is too short so unpacking (uni-extractor) and a manual install as above works Win7 64 bit / Gimp 2.8.20

Greg as with all other DLL or executable start errors you need to place the executable in its own folder and point GIMP to it. Then restart GIMP.
For instance mine is in the /.gimp-2.8/plugins/MathMapPlugin folder. Then i just pointed GIMP to it with Edit>Preferences>Folders>Plug-ins>MathMapPlugin

Then i restarted GIMP.
Also make sure you have the mathmap folder with the expressions in the /.gimp-2.8 directory.
/.gimp-2.8/mathmap

The problem across all architectures is upgrading something often breaks something else.
Did Escher predicted that all those years ago?

I removed mathmap.exe from Program Files\Gimp 2\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins and added
a path to the mathmap folder that is currently in my plug-ins directory and

Tada! It works again!!

Thank you Rod and everyone else!

Hey, Rich; could you share the gyroid preset as you showed here? Don't have that one for Mathmap. :)

That is just a Droste, with some fairly random (by eye) settings

The problem with making Droste animations is it's hard to make seamless. I made this one without the rotation distortion a few years back.
