Remember GIMP-2.9 versions are a whole different animal. MOST scripts and plug-ins will probably NOT work. The development versions are NOT intended for production use by any means. They are for testing only. If i were you i would stick with the latest stable version of GIMP-2.8.
+1 to that, especially if you are a new user. It can be difficult otherwise to figure if your problem is due to your inexperience or a bug in Gimp 2.9.
