The "new" version mentioned is the 1.1 available since a lot of days.
But do not rely on animicule's outcomes look to "understand" what the standard defaults are: he always manipulates the results (plasma?)...hehehe

The toy duck was nearly straight up with the ver 1.1.
Extracted the duck.
New transparent layer below it - Filters>Render>Clouds>Plasma or Plasma2
Merged the duck layer down onto the background.
Ran the filter with 7 and there it was!

Extacted source w/transparent background.
Ran bird-754677_1920_extacted, as a Crazy Crochet (colour areas =5) (combo crochet)
Used colors > colorize to make the crochet brownish
Then back to the extracted source and
bird-754677_1920_extacted, as a Crazy Crochet (colour areas =5) (nuanced crochet)
Then copied and pasted the nuanced crochet on top of the browish

Nice outcome, animicule (to my taste I would have colorized the BG differently, but it's only a matter of taste)

Just for fun, from Photomaster tutorial the escaping butterfly is now too fat to fly...

The butterfly pic I took at a local park and used Gimp to color it. It was actually used on a book cover!
