Mandelea Memorial type of Graphic

Mon Jul 09, 2018 7:27 pm

I am sure most of you would have seen the picture of the memorial of Nelson Mandela. ( iam attaching picture.) I tried to figure out how the designer would have planned and executed it. With my very limited knowledge, I created few pictures. Though the effect has come, I am not happy since the lines were not as thick as they should be. I will make few more attempts and post my picture if they are worthy of sharing.
I am sure one of the many giants in our Chat group would develop a method.

Just use the filter "Engrave" (after rotating the image is you like the lines be vertical).
Then set a result as a layer on top of any BG image.
Then add transparency to the top layer and "color to Alpha" (white).

Here is the image I created.
My steps were: Open an image: Scale to, say 900 x 900 pixels -- Then Save
Scale the image to 200 x 200, rotate 90 degrees CW, apply Engrave filter
Rotate image by 90 degrees CCW. Scale image back to its original size.
As the Mandela memorial was created by solid Iron Posts, the 'lines' are thick. But in the image I created I was not able to make lines quite thick. They appear as thin lines drawn with black pencil and makes the image as a drawing and not as a picture of a 3-D structure. I could not make the lines fairly thick.
I am attaching the picture created by me.

Newsprint filter, not Engrave !

The monument is imitating a 3D halftone effect.
The Newsprint filter is for making halftones !
Use the line option.

Theres also a way to create this effect manually.

Rotated, used GIMP's built in Engrave preset (under distortion menu) and rotated back. I then added BRL and replaced texture with a pattern.

Just wanted an excuse to play too. lol

No background reference since this time I used an actual capture I took myself. :)

I think I am obsessed with Mandela Memorial type effect. I have developed a somewhat zany method.
Step1. Open a Landscape picture. Now paste a portrait of some Celebrity.,
Then go to colors: Desaturate, colors:brightness-contrast, colors: Threshold.
Step 2. Create New transparency layer . With the Rectangle Sect tool' select a vertical rectangle with just 2 or 3 pixels wide. Fill white. Select this rectangle, copy and paste and move ,by say 5 pixel. Repeat this till the entire layer is filled with white Stripes.
STEP 3: Duplicate this layer and invert the color. The result will be black stripes covering the white stripes in the Layer below..
STEP 4: Go to the White stripe layer. Select all and move the layer to the right by one or two pixels. ( The idea is to create a thin white line on the right side Black stripes.
STEP 5: Merge the three layers and position it properly over the 'Landscape' Layer.
That's all.
I am attaching a picture created by me. (This may be a crude method but the only redeeming feature is that the vertical Black lines are fairly thick and spaced out!)
