Interesting, to say the least. I haven't tried this yet.

That looks very interesting. Wonder if it only works in Ubuntu. I'm not sure if I can cope with a single GIMP window anymore. When I first started using GIMP, I really wished it were one window like Paint Shop Pro which I had to leave behind when I switched to Linux.

Now I'm so used to the 3 window mode I think I'd feel crowded with a single window.

One of my concerns as well. Old habits, new changes... at least I am told it's an option in 2.8, not a built in permanent function? Too lazy to go revisit the gimpusers article.

Now I have gotten used to Partha's 2.7.x and I can't live without single window mode!
I have to give a big shoutout to Partha for compiling that for us Windows users!

Yes, it's an optional feature. Gimp devs would get lynched in the street if they got rid of the multi-window mode completely. ;)

I believe it will always be a choice option in Gimp. :)
There has been another program out for some time named GimpPad that allows for single window mode also.
Not sure if it still exists out there but you could Google it i am sure.
Yup found it, and there is a new version out. :)

No single window mode anymore though.Just a photo shop wanabe setup. :)
And if you download it i would suggest getting desktop pins to keep the windows tools and dialogs on top or they vanish under the image window.Kind of a different setup though.

Looking at your screenshot (btw - hell of a toolbar). Is this not a re-hash of the old deweirdifyer plugin. It has been resurrected at the portable apps site

http://portableapps.com/apps/graphics_pictures/gimp_portable/background_window

works equally well (or not) with a regular installation.

Had a look at the python script for a non-ubuntu (pclos 2011) machine. Fell at the first hurdle, no python-wnck package in the repo.

Not a problem as I find consolidating the tools and dialogs into one a good option.

I have recently compiled gimp 2.7 for my pclos installation, don't really find the single window mode much of an improvment however, I was amazed that gimp 2.7 imported all of my gimp 2.6 settings automatically.

I am on Gentoo Linux.
I searched the repository to find something that would equal wnck.
I found these:
gnome-python-desktop-base
libwnck-python
libwnck
libwnck was already installed.
libwnck-python pulled in gnome-python-desktop-base as a dependency.
I copied the gimpbox.py file to /usr/bin and made it executable.
I then opened a console on my desktop and started gimpbox.
After loading Gimp and setting up everything it would shut down.
The error messages I got where identical to what I'd get if I'd run just gimp.
I searched for error messages in .xsession-errors and dmesg: nothing!
Without any clue as to what went wrong it's impossible to fix it.
Gerard.

You can get the dock tool bar at http://rocketdock.com/ Rich. (Windows only i believe)

Normally Gimp will take any user gimp-2.6 folder and copy everything to a new gimp-2.7 folder including rc files.
I created my own 2.7 folder then installed 2.7.3 because i know some of the scripts are too deprecated to run in 2.7's new interface.Themes will not work either they make things vanish into thin air. :lol - Once you create the 2.7 folder Gimp will use it instead.

But back on subject i know of no other single window mode than 2.7 that actually works somewhat.
Gerard is Gimpbox's only flavor in Linux version or is it just one executable Python script?Maybe i can test in Windows?
Gimp-2.8 should be out by October-November this year and single window mode should be a user option in that version.(hopefully it will retain its window setting), as the only thing i find wrong with it is the setting isn't established in the gimprc (preferences) file.I never did try writing it in manually that may work.

Having to resize and adjust the main window constantly has always been one of my two complaints about gimp. I've looked forward to single window for a long time. I'll try this the next time I have linux running.

Hi Rod,
gimpbox.py is a single python script.
Running it in Windows should theoretically be possible provided you can find MS equivalents for the dependencies.
In the first part you'll find this:

import gtk, gobject
import wnck
import time
import os
import sys

And of course you'll need python.
@Gms9810,
I agree with you on the resizing problem,that's why I wanted this too.
Ubuntu must have done something that's not standard stuff to make this work.

I upgraded some of the wnck programs to unstable but same result.
Gerard.
