Here is my latest text effect. Surprising how one thing can change it!
Text was done just using a light brown gradient to colour. Then I did all the outer/inner bevel + emboss. I ran recursive transform to get the extra layers. Last of all I added a lighting effects bump and it turned almost metalic looking.

Excellent! This is probably going to be my next desktop background.
Just gotta figure out the invisible Gimp splash png.

I did find a pretty nice dot font at 1001 free fonts though.
