Hi all,

I'm new to the site, but it seems that this is a healthy and active communtity of GIMP experts and I consider myself an avereage level GIMP user... I'd like to hang around to improve my skills.

I tried this tutorial for what I'm trying to acheive but to no avail.

I want just the gradient to follow the path... i.e., if I have a curved path, I want to use the FG to Transparent gradient and make it perpendicular to every point along the path.

Is this possible?

Here's a pic illustrating what I'm after:

I want the end result to look like a smooth curved shadow on the image.

Do you have a finished example of what you're seeking? If I am understanding you correctly, you want the gradient to sort of blend with a perpendicular fade (using FG to transparency)?

Maybe wrapmap could obtain this.

See this thread for an example: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=553&p=5127&hilit=wrapmap#p5127 (read the posts that follow, too).

Ofnuts explains the use of this script on the link Oregonian provides.

In 2.7 a possible solution is to set the gradient in the "clipboard brush", and then stroke the path with the brush after activating the "brush rotation" in the brush dynamics.

This is kinda what I want, except there are overlapping gradients due to the way I achieved the effect ( horizontal gradient, then a few at a couple different angles ). As you can see, there are some areas that are slightly darker than others due to the overlap of the gradients which yields a not-so-smooth curved gradient.

I'm not sure how to set a gradient as the clipboard brush. And what's the brush rotation for?

Try using the "Darken Only" mode for the gradients. That should eliminate the overlap shadow.

Awesome, wasn't aware of this mode! Thanks!!!

Proof that even long term GIMP users learn something new everyday. Thanks, bkh1914.

Draw the gradient somewhere, select, and copy to clipboard.

Brush rotation insures that the axis of the gradient remains perpendicular to the path.

Awesome! I'm using 2.6.11, is this technique possible in this version?

Alas, brush rotation is only in 2.7. Using my Wrapmap script as indicated above could be the next best, but it works on a selection. For your needs, I would extend the path a bit and close it, make a selection, run Wrapmap on that, and then keep the appropriate bits from the result.

@Ofnuts: This is a little off topic, but how exactly did you achieve the neon sign effect in your sig? That looks nice.

Very nice Ana. Paths are one of my favorite tools.

I found this video tutorial that has basic information about paths and it has some very good tips in it.

You can click this path to the video and there are some other basic tutorials on that page.

Thank you "O" for the tip and video. :)
I didn't realised that this is actually so easy to do it.
