Bevel 2.1 is here.

The rendering has been improved. In fact, the rendering part of the script was totally rewritten to give better, more consistent results - I hope, at least. Two redundant options have been removed due to different rendering (feather and pre-blur - these two are no longer needed). No new options have yet been added, but I'm planning to. The v2.0 script creates much cooler looking bevels than all the previous versions combined.

Please let me know if you encounter any glitches!

v2.1 update: adjustable gloss, intersect with alpha option

I just love this script. As O says, it is the best bevel plug-in yet.

Do I need to take the bevel 1.5 out of my plug-in folder or can I leave both of them in???

If it's the one dd wrote, 2-ton, you should remove it. If you're not sure, in GIMP, go to Help > Plug-in browser and type bevel in the search window. The information on the right will tell you which version it is and scrolling down will tell you who wrote it.

Just tried this version; had to figure out how to use it first of course (requires a selection; doesn't look at transparancies as the chisel script-fu equivalent does). Looks pretty good dd. Thanks. :)

If you for some reason want to keep the older version, you'll have to go in with a text editor and change the procedure name and menu path. Otherwise it will conflict with 2.0.

In my opinion (and this is my opinion, some may disagree and that's fine) always using the selection for the shape is better UI-design, and less ambiguous. What if you have a layer that has alpha but you want to give it a bevel on the layer edges for some reason? When the script always uses the selection, you always know exactly the shape of bevel you get.

However, that said... I might not be opposed to the idea of adding a checkbox option for using the alpha channel. I think I would make it so that if it's checked, the selection is intersected with the layer's alpha channel... this would allow additional functionality - you could easily bevel just a part of a layer.

Bevel 2.1

http://www.fileden.com/files/2010/2/7/2 ... evel2_1.py

There is now an option "intersect with alpha", which uses a combination of the selection && the alpha channel for the bevel. If you check it, you can get results like this:

Image

As you can see, here I used a rectangle selection. With the option unchecked, the script works as earlier, using only the selection for the bevel.

Also, the gloss is now adjustable, with a 0-10 scale. 0 is the regular no gloss, while 5 corresponds to the old "gloss on" option. 6-10 makes the gloss even stronger and can produce weird effects...

thanks for sharing DD, very nice. I love the preview feature.

I don't know what intersect with alpha means. I tried it both ways and I can't see any difference.

One more thing... the old 1.x bevels had this bug where if you used the preview function, then created the final bevel, the bevel layer was created at the top of the stack. Now it's always created above the active layer, except if there is no active layer (in which case it goes to the top).

Also, if there's no active layer, the "intersect with alpha" option is ignored.

dd,
Question: I have a lime green satin pattern that I like, and when I use it with the bevel, it turns to silvery-gray.
I changed all the modes, but if I move the colored layer to the top of the stack it will be green. Is it supposed to turn out silver or gray when I do the bevel?

Try using the bevel with grain merge or soft light modes. Those layer modes are the best for preserving saturation of the lower layers. Also, adjust opacity.

I like the gloss slider plus having a preview available. It just keeps on getting better.

Cool. I like this script. I use it on many things from text to silhouettes.

Then I use metallic look in gmic.

I like beveled, shiny things, haha.

Me too. I am a shiny freak. Love it Nixnine, very striking. I can't find the metallic look in GMIC. Is it call metallic?
