I like to fool around with different text effects too and you gave me another idea for getting that "burn't" look. I didn't get the relief effect just right but what the heck. This would make a nice script if someone is up to the challenge.

Looks nice Draconian. Did you make that smoke, or is it part of the font? Maybe a shadow or a bevel might make it look more 3D, like it is burned into the wood.

Molly,

I did put a shadow on the left side and a highlight on the right. Maybe I need to change the opacity of the text layer to be a little lighter so you can see the shadow more clearly. Like I said I didn't get the relief just right.

The smoke is a set of brushes I downloaded somewhere. Here's the zip file.

When you do your shadow, do you use light and shadow, then drop shadow? I can't see your shadow.

The shadow is inside the text on the top-left and the hi-lite is on the bottom-right (inside the text). :)
Both are nicely done.

What I was trying to say is that I would like to see a bit of the wood behind the text look like it is burned into it.
Yes, it is very nicely done. I love the way you put the smoke around the cracks to make it look like it is still smoldering.

Adding singing to the wood (black in overlay mode) also helps add realism (it would be better under the smoke, of course ;) ):

That is what i was going to suggest, a burnt outline around the text itself.
Nice Rob! :)

I just had to have a go at this. I found it very difficult to come up with a convincing representation of a burnt image such as would be made with a branding iron (letters or logo).
The burnt imprint should appear beneath the surface. So it must have slight indents "walls" inside the print but there should not be a very big difference in colour as the walls are burnt almost black or very deep brown, as is the bottom . The differences in colour should be minimal yet convey a feeling of depth. At the top there will be minimal lateral burns in the grain of the wood. There will also be a slight discolouration around the shape as the heat burns sideways as well as downwards. And generally there will a larger area that will be discoloured from smoke and heat.

I tried to keep these criteria in mind but I am not that happy that I achieved what I wanted. Anyway here is my interpretation of a burned imprint.

That does look pretty darn good wbool63. I tend to agree with your thought process and Rob As' interpretation is valid as well. One point to consider is the implement doing the branding will make a big difference in hte appearance of hte end result. Whether it is a solid or 'filled' letter or just the outline. The outline would render more of the effect like you got whereas mine and Rob As' looks more like flat metal letters were used to do the branding. Just a thought.

I still think this would be a great script either stand alone or as an option in another script like 'logo workshop' perhaps. I have no idea how the script would have to be written to add the random smoke though.

I thought maybe a bit of a bevel would do it but with both of these I used the tutorial in this thread and thought they didnt really look authentic
