Sometimes when I click a tab on my Layers window the whole tab comes off and I have to re-dock it. I've tried locking them in place. When I close GIMP and then restart it, boxes for locking are no longer checked. The Channels tab simply won't stay on there. It's gone once I close GIMP and reopen it.

Is there some way to make them stay locked?

It holds the universe together but will it hold GIMP together?

I want to say there is a setting in the preferences that tells gimp to remember your window sizes and locations somewhere. I don't have gimp in front of me right now, but that may be your fix.

Set up the windows and docking you want, then
Edit > Preferences > Window Management
Click "Save Window Positions Now"
Checking "Save windows positions on exit" will also do the trick, but I prefer to have my windows in a standard position at start-up.

I locked each tab to the window, added the Channels tab, locked it. Saved the windows position In Window Management in Prefs and closed GIMP.

Opened GIMP and, voila!, Channels tab still there, all tabs still locked. Worked great! Thanks so much guys.

One of the most annoying things about when a dialog popped off the Layers window, it would go behind the window and I had to drag it out and away from the window to grab it and drag it back.
