I saw a post about a splash screen contest and wanted to get creative. I found the images folder containing the current splash screena nd I've made a few more but I need to know how to change it. If I simply replace the default splash with a new one, in the images folder, I get no splash screen at all when gimp boots up. I checked preferences in gimp and didn't see anything but there has got to be something somewhere that points to a particular image in that folder to tell gimp to use it as the new splash.

To paraphrase Rod viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2137&start=0#p27792

Install the image file in your YOURUSERNAME/gimp-2.x/splashes folder (create it if needed).
When Gimp loads it will load the image in your splashes directory.
You can add as many as you like there and Gimp will open them at different times.

Thanks for the help, Rob. I didn't realize there was already a post on this subject. Someday I'll figure out how to do a search on this site. I don't see a search bar anywhere.

I got my new splash to work OK but I have some questions.

How can you add more files with the same name to the same folder? How do you differentiate between the files. When I replaced the default with the new one I named ".gimp-splash_1.png" it didn't come up at all. It seems which ever one you want to use has to be named exactly like the default (.gimp-splash.png)

Not if you place them in your user/.gimp-2.6/splashes folder. :)

You may have to create it, Gimp doesn't make that folder. But it does search it if it is present.

You can not keep two files of the same name in one directory.Rename one or take one out.
Or windows will overwrite one of them.It will usually ask you this first however. :)

The image names do not matter as long as they are in the /splashes folder. Or so my experience has been.

I understand the steps just fine. The first thing I did after reading Robs post was to create the new Splashes folder and put my splashes in there.

What I did not understand was Rob's last statement. I have rebooted gimp a half dozen times and it always uses the 2nd splash I put in the folder.

BTW NIX, I like your Matrix splash.

Here Draco. It's got an Asian flavor to it.

Try putting in a 3rd one. ;)

Nix that's great! I'm gonna steal it and use it as my third splash like Rod said and see if it will get random on me.

Thanks for the tip Rod. It's working now, randomly selecting splashes. Gonna try a gif next.

I have actually taken the splash image out of the actual images directory, and placed one gif file in the splashes folder and it won't play the file.

So my guess is Gimp will only begin using the splashes directory if it see's a choice of 3.
It is weird though. :)
