Oops didn't mean to press enter.
Long time no see everybody, i haven't been able to get around and offer some of the new stuff i've learned while messing around but i have one question.
How can i make a custom team logo for some of my fantasy sports teams?
Here are some examples of what im talking about... These are not mine but are being used for my own educational purposes only.

These are all custom made by a guy i know but he hasn't replied or said anything to me lately when i asked him for help. If anyone can help me figure out how to do these, that would be great. I figured he might have used maybe the paths tool? then paintbrush? I have no idea but i would like to know how to make something similar to all of those.

The path tool, definitely... but InkScape instead of Gimp, very likely, too.

Here's a quick tip. Don't make your logos/icons in Gimp or even PhotoShop, as their Raster editors. You wanna use a vector editor like Inkscape or Raven. The reason why is with a vector editor you can make your logo in say 100x100 and scale it up to say 800x800 and rotate it a bunch of times, and it'll NEVER loose quality. (notice thoughs images have a ruff edge, and are choppy)

When you save a vector file it's usually an .svg file type. SVG stands for Scalable Vector Graphic, and trust me this is a huge help, and really keeps your projects looking professional, and nice.

Raster Editors like Gimp, and PS are nice, but rotating them, scaling them, and such they loose their quality, and it's not good for making logos/icons.

This image below is simple, but explains a lot on the differences, and how raster editors work compared to vector editors.

Dead image link removed. Admin.

However I don't want you thinking that when you import a photo into a vector editor link Inkscape or Illustrator that you'll now all of a sudden be able to scale, rotate it, etc: at 50x50 and make it 800x800 and except exactly the same quality (I can see that happening in the future, but we're not there yet) as it's not gonna happen. You'll haft to make it a vector image yourself drawing circles, and crap over yourself in order to turn it into vector. Get what I'm saying?

So hope this quick tip helped you out bro.

In relation to vector graphics, what others have said in this thread is true, but let's not overlook GIMP's ability to manipulate vectors in the form of vector fonts and dings. You can certainly create very impressive logos using GIMP, along with the massive library of TrueType, OpenType and FreeType fonts and dings at your disposal.

Some very nice logos can be created in Gimp.
Just create them very large at first, and at the finish scale them down. :)

Besides most logos are very simply designed. The less colors the better.

What is your theme of your logo? Will it include an animal, or an object, or will it just be fonts/text? If we knew more about the direction you were leaning toward, I'm sure we could offer some suggestions.

A good place to start is picking a color scheme first. :)
This is usually about 3 colors that work well together.
GPICK is a great little program for creating color schemes.
