Hi-

I'm looking for examples (png) of cut out images/clipart that have a white fringe that makes them look bad on darg backgrounds...

I'm working on a script to automatically clean them up and want some samples to wok with.

TIA-

You can do them yourself... wand-select the background and delete.

This butterfly had a white bg. I selected the bg with the wand and deleted the bg, leaving white in the semitransparent pixels.

RobA, is the new script going to be related to this one you made?

The irony is that after a few hours of playing around I found I could get better results by taking a fringed image and merging it down on a bg colour matching the fringe then running that script :(

Oh well, never hurts to experiment.

Well it's always nice to get scripts that can remove backgrounds and, who knows, you may have come up with something perfect. Experimentation is definitely the key in GIMP.

One of the things I've been experimenting with is trying to get rid of multicolored pixels around stuff even after painting the background a single color. After running color to alpha on the grown selection, sometimes using desaturate on the grown selection works, some times it doesn't look good.

Rob - I hope you are able to create this script for all of us who are tired of pixel by pixel corrections and other manual step methods. Like most, I generally resort to the quick wand select/delete ritual but as usual there are always artifacts to deal with. Even the layer mask/erase routine leaves something to be desired as it sacrifices image quality to some degree. I have yet to try the paths approach as someone suggested on another post, although it also sounds just as tedious as other methods.

I have been doing a lot of this lately and like everyone else, I would certainly welcome this script. I think Molly was struggling with hair on another post and the one I have here is probably equally difficult. The background was originally black and I have already done the wand select/delete and gross cleanup, but as you can see there is still a lot of black on the edges. I ended up doing alpha to selection/shrink/invert/delete to get rid of it but the subtle edges were lost. You are welcome to try with this one. I would be interested in the results. Best of luck!

O - I haven't tried your method yet but I would think with the multicolored pixel edges it is always going to be tough. I had some of that very same issue in this pic.

Rob:

Your transparent background script works beautifully, IMHO.

I took Drac's fractal using your script, then put one of my Gears background behind it. I'm impressed. If you can top even that, you are an uber scripting God in my eyes.

I just wanted peeps to see the cleanliness of that extraction using the script using Drac's complex fractal. Those are some really extraordinary hole extractions, too. Awesome stuff.

Thanks Rod, got it. I haven't had a chance to use it yet but I will in the next day or so. It did a really fantastic job on that fractal.

I did, however, notice several oval shaped distortions. Mahvin, was this your way of highlighting the awsome hole extractions or a resulting artifact of the script?

It was unwanted artifacts, but I could have eliminated that by not checking the open holes box.

Thanks mahvin. I just need to automate the process a bit more so when repeat/trusted users upload, they don't have to wait for it to appear.

But back on topic. That is a useful script and a cool image. It's right out of a sci-fi movie. :hehe

It's nice to know there will be a place to upload and download scripts that can be trusted.
And Tux's site is spectacular. :)

Thanks Tux!

Even though it's not perfect, it's still the best method I have ever seen. The holes are no biggie as they can be handled with a eraser and fuzzy brush since there's only a few places to deal with. Definitely easier than dealing with the whole image. Thanks again. This one will definitely be the "nuke" in my script arsenal.
