Well, I tried it with the clone tool, the healing tool, cut and paste and I did nothing but make a great mess. I know it can be done by one of the experts here though. The part on the side of the face where the days whisker growth is is very tricky.

Averaged color sample in neck shadow: value 109,109,109
Averaged color sample in neck light: value 189,189,189

Ratio: 109*255/189=147

Add white layer in "divide" mode above picture
Set FG color to 147,147,147

Paint white layer over shadow, the tough part is to get the border just right:

Very good ofnuts.
I tried it again, I cut out the shadow with the free select tool, pasted it on a separate layer, went to colors, levels and played around with that until it looked the same color tones. I moved it down to the shadow area and used the blur tool to smooth out the edges. I might have another go at it. The joins are still showing.

Me, I would paint the divide layer with a soft brush and/or airbrush (and a tablet if available). Nothing more needed. Image above is just a quick hack, so I couldn't take the time to get the border right.

Just a little bit of math. In the same vein, I'm working on a procedure to remove semi-transparent watermarks.

haha, no, the process wasn't hard. I just would have never thought to do it like that.

Just a try; stuff like this takes a lot of tlc and I usually avoid doing these type of edits since I'm lazy. lol

Using Leon's "grain-colors" script.

Not perfect, either.

You all did a great job and thanks for trying....I'll have a go at it myself I think but I might leave the real thing for the photographic experts to pretty up.

Voted best result so far & by far nevertheless. And don't forget that the present company all know there was a shadow before, so we are all looking for remnants. But anyone "fresh" on the picture won't notice anything with this one. They may notice that the picture is doctored, but not for this.

the grain colors script looks to be the best/easiest way to do a large and complicated area!

You did a very good job but now it doesn't look as natural to me cuz the way the sun is, there should be a shadow on both your faces. Now the girls face is in your shadow. Anyway nice work.

Funny that every one assumes that the OP is the boy on the picture, notwithstanding the somewhat deeper shadow on the girl's face :)
