I posted this in this forum post by ofnuts, but thought I would also post it separately. Inspired by the video linked to in the post by ofnuts, I attempted to do one of the animation effects in that video using Gimp and GAP:



The whole animation is based on each of the three colored pencils being animated to move up and down and then just adjusting the frame of the animation each pencil starts at. However, it's a bit more complex than that for achieving a sine wave effect. It took me about three or four hours to look at the animation in the video, plan it out, work through errors, render it, make additional changes and again render it to achieve the final results.

It would be interesting to try some of the other effects in that video.

They bring in the pencils differently in the video, which could also be done using Gimp and GAP. I just chose this approach.

There are a lot of neat effects in that stop motion video that are a good challenge to try to simulate using Gimp and GAP.

Those are so very cool. The sine wave pencils ... I wonder if the same technique could be made for ocean waves in a cartoon-like animation, perhaps with a boat riding up and down on the waves.

I love the spinning pencils and how you moved each pencil onto the image and then off again.

I see hours and hours of time spent doing those and truly appreciate that you made those and posted them. GAP has so much capability that I haven't explored.

OMG! CCbarr, those are amazing, you sure know your stuff.

Hmmmmm. When I used Path Follow in GAP it flipped my boat upside-down and moved it to the right side. I need to do more work on the boat exiting the frame, also.

Used Script-Fu/Shape Paths/Sine Wave for my path.



I've attached the boat file and the waves_000001.xcf file with the path in it if anyone wants to play with them.
