Thanks. I use smplayer most of the time because it doesn't use codecs and works well with GAP, but VLC is still one of my favorite players. :)

I'm surprised VLC 2.0.1 (2012-03-19) has recently been released. VideoLAN doesn't normally update that often.

On a side note, LibreOffice is now at version 3.5.1. I would read the LibreOffice release notes first.

I've tried VLC on several computers and I just don't like it. It crashes on whatever I install it on. MS media player won't play .flv files, which is neanderthal of them. I keep coming back to to the kmplayer.

i think I'll give smplayer a go and see if I like it, but not from softonics, I'm leery of their down loader.

Oh, I got it on sourceforge and am completely sold on it. I've already put it on all 5 of my computers. It does just what I want, simply and easily. It's not bloated and hasn't crashed yet.

I'm running windows 10.

I haven't heard of these media player before.
I've always used VLC and have become accustom to it.
I feel,
that It's not about which one is better.
Some may have features that others don't and visa-versa.
Try them both out,
to see which one suits you more.

That's true. I'm curious about SMPlayer more because it is an open source player and I believe it does a lot more than KMPlayer which I have tried when I had my old laptop and it ran on Windows 7.

Another aspect that you might consider.
Is the weight/size of the installed software and if a portable version is available.
If you have limited space,
being portable could be desirable over an installation.

SMPlayer is standard issue on Ubuntu. It is a GUI front-end for Mplayer which is a CLI player. Works nicely. It has become my default player.

My laptop isn't limited on space yet. I haven't downloaded much of anything for it to have gobbled up my hard drive or RAM. I'm not sure if there is a portable version available, but I believe there is.
