It has got to be looking good, although I remember the time between 2.2 & 2.4 and 2.4 to 2.6 and all the waiting.

This came up a week ago in a buried-away section of the PClinuxOS forum and is a procedure for compiling Gimp on PCLOS. Its a long url from wordpress so I tinyurled it.

http://tinyurl.com/7y6lx87

Worth a look just to see the effort these guys make to produce packages for ordinary users. It has just been updated with some screenshots of the Gimp 2.8 RC1 splash screen.

Although this for compiling Gimp, each one of the packages and there are dozens, needed for Gimp goes through a similar process. The site is a bit slow so don't overload it.

I have Gimp 2.7.5 running, still thinking about 2.8, but the whole process still amazes me, hats off to all the clever guys.

Looks like a May release is planned so far. :)
I was guessing June or July myself.

That one changes dates back and forth.
Why I don't know.
I check it almost daily.
Couple of days ago it had a date in April.

Gerard.

It's not very accurate. The changes are based on a 8 hrs/day workload. So, everyday the workload does not change adds a day to the chart. See? :)

Well, now it looks like if a given tablet works, it will already be working. All the work will be done to get it all fixed in gtk+3.0 which is where gimp is moving. So, I am afraid, 2.8 is not it.

My wacom tablet works fine on the latest 2.7 release... pressure sensitivity and all. I thought the tablet support was pretty much fixed already?

What I want to know is, will the weird chunky effect be fixed in 2.8... it's kind of annoying.

That weird chunky effect is not present in Parthas portable gimp-2.7.6 version dd. :)
And it's much faster than the dev release for some reason. No idea why.

Maybe he took more care ?
(also because Ramon Miranda and others were very disappointed by that nasty bug that should have made the incoming new GPS unusable)
That bug was only recently fixed...Well partially fixed, all the tablets that were working well with gimp 2.6 now should work well in 2.7

For the others is needed to wait a new patched GTK

The chunky effect is still present, ie. when I pan the image around weird artifacts show. Also it's actually really slow, it's slower than the previous portable version (2.7.5) and drawing is pretty much impossible because of it... if I move the pen too fast it doesn't register all of the movement (happens with mouse too).

I compiled Gimp 2.8RC1 in PCLOS on Monday and that is the same, the image is slow to refresh if you move it, ie chunky.
It is a reasonable machine 3 GHz quad + 4 GB memory so it is not lack of resources. Otherwise it is looking good.
Maybe a small price for progress.

I need help here. Am I the only one NOT looking forward to 2.8? I've been keeping up with the portable versions of Partha's releases and for all the waiting and false promises, instead of an improved tool, all I see is a hyped up gimmick! Bottom line - can 2.8 do anything at all that 2.6.11 can't do just as easily? There's a cage tool that distorts badly, some filters which are old third party filters included by default, a second rate bunch of brush presets that doesn't remotely compare to the quality presets in GPS and the new tool sliders are impossible to get hold of with a Wacom and impossible to adjust finely.
The advantages are...
Well that's it for the advantages! maybe there's some awesome tool hidden in there that I have yet to come across?

I guess I am one of the minority cuz I like Gimp 2.6.11 and Partha's 2.7.4 because of the one window option.
I am not excited at all about all these in between versions. If and when 2.8 is released as a stable version, if I like it I will switch over, if not, I will stay where I am.

For every one that uses their Wacom tablet a lot, that should be a deciding factor too. If it works well using 2.6 and not in 2.8, that should also be considered.

Anyway, I had my say and shared my opinion and I'm pretty sure that 2.8 won't be a disappointment because of all the hard work and time the programmers are spending on it.

I always appreciate the people who create quality software and give it away free so I hope I didn't sound ungrateful, but 2.8 holds no advantages for me and I'm sticking to 2.6.11.

Hy mate i understand your frustration but i feel also directly criticized because the " filters which are old third party filters included by default" exist only in the Partha portable version and in my "windows friendly "version (did i send you the link?)
and i contributed to both ( in particular to suggest what to include and test compatibility )

And of them only very few are "old", (if old maybe are included because still rocks  ) most are recent and in the very last version, and in same cases was not a build of that very last version before

BUT the basic point on "filters which are old third party filters included by default" is that athey have nothing to do with gimp 2.8 as planned by the developer they are included by me and partha because a peculiar concept of packaging:
what should be in gimp but could not be in gimp for the developer need to maintain the code the most simple and compact.
And the idea is that at packaging time, respecting the developers need, what was excluded may be integrated at binary level without complicate the original source code.

I could avoid to reply to that point because i am one of the main responsible, but i know for you was a marginal point, maybe slipped in to give more emphasis (and no..i don't feel offended :hi5 ...i just wanted clarify )

so now back to the real basic point of your message

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
you are right on the fact that the most promising changes (16 bit support, adjustment layers ) are posponed to a uncertain future (gimp-3.0 or even gimp-3.2) and that is delusive

still there are a lot of changes to quote a few

option for single windows layout (you may not care much about, but was very requested )
new text tool (i don't use much so i can't say how much is better, but looks more powerful and flexible)
new brush engine (that doesn't modify only the brush tool but all tool using brush, from the eraser to dodge&burn )
Old and relevant bugs in the Layer modes ,for color & and overlay mode ,fixed (even if only in Gegl operations)
Layer group , for sure this is very relevant when working with many layers

About weirdness in the new cage tool...maybe the will to fix that could be one of the reason of delay of the 2.8 release
b
And about GPS it can't be used fully on gimp 2.7-2.8 and Ramon is working to adapt to the new release
it was a dilay because a new bug in the new GTK that screwed up the support for graphic tablet, the bug now is not really fixed but is somehow minimized, so now could make again sense try to port gps to gimp-2.8
