Hello!

I have been using gimp for a little over a year now and have been having a blast uploading and using brushes. However, once I reached 3,700 brushes...gimp stopped working.

Is there a limit on how many brushes you can use and if so....can anyone help me with how to keep all my brushes but be able to use them without installing and uninstalling them every time i need them?

Thanks so much!

Amy

I don't know the answer to your question but just thought I'd say welcome to Gimpchat. I'm sure somebody else will answer soon.

You can keep your brushes in several folders and add/remove the folders using Edit/Preferences/Folders (Gimp's flat list of brushes makes 3700 active brushes (or even a couple of hundreds) unmanageable anyway).

There is also the GURM plugin.

Welcome to Gimp Chat aimless. I too am a brush addict and having that many sounds like you just need to organize a bit. It must take forever for Gimp to load all those brushes on start up. Like Ofnuts suggested, GURM is really handy for organizing and you can check which ones you want GIMP to load and which ones to keep in reserve. Even though you have a ton of brushes, I think you will find after playing with them for a bit, you don't really use ALL of them all that often so you can keep them "dormant" until you need them. Gimp loads really fast after that.

I agree with previous that you'll need to use better organization ... but what in the world do you need 3700 brushes for in the first place? :)
.
Griatch (which uses the same 1-3 brushes since many years)

i had thousands of brushes installed but as now i keep all in stand by (with GURM) most of the times (let say in 99% of the cases)
and usually i use only the parametric brushes
(that ones you may modify from the brush editor , simple shapes as circles, ellipses, squares & polygons

The only miss i miss are yet not existing in gimp, "rings" (circles ellipses or poligons with empty center ) and spirals

But to be honest i don't miss them much

LOL! Thanks to all of you who responded, I really appreciate it! And yes, I need help for my brush addiction! I will check out what you all have said. TBH, I have used a lot of these brushes....but I'm sure I will grow tired and have a select few.

Again thank you so much :D

I only just thought of this PC - you could easily make bitmap brushes.

aimless - sorry I couldn't help you myself. It's an absurd time of the morning here in Britain (3am) but I don't sleep well so I'm usually around. I'm not too clever on the technicalities of Gimp but if you're patient somebody will answer. It's good to have you here anyway - Have fun!

Honestly i seldom use something different from the basic parametric brushes

still i have tons of planet, stars birds ,fish, grass brushes.only problem more i have less chances to found the right one in the right moment..

That's like me - I love having all the GPS brushes to play with, but I usually only use graphite pencil, oils and a fuzzy circle in a serious painting.

I am not a computer genius...but I do know my way around one...however, I am having great difficulty getting GURM to work....maybe I am just too frustrated at this point to see whats wrong.

I cleaned out all my brushes from gimp and organized them in a file on my desktop. I downloaded Python and gurm....followed the directions and I am not finding gurm in my filters folder....

If anyone can help I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Aimess

After installing Python-2.6 did you also install PyGTK, PyCairo, and PyObject?
Afterwards you also have to re install Gimp and select customize when installing.

Try not to keep too many brushes bigger than 1 mb either. That helps speed me up there. I have about 700 brushes and most are well below the 1 mb mark.

Okay....I downloaded everything, followed the instructions and when I went to customize install of gimp....it will not let me click the box for the gimp python extension.

Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

How to correctly install Python for Windows in Gimp-2.6.11

Restarting after each install is important.
