that's the release candidate... not the "actual" 2.8

Is the release candidate like a beta?

Yes.
I am running it (in Linux of course),runs quite well.
I hope python is included otherwise a lot of plugins won't work.
Gerard.

I would like to put it in Fedora 16 but I don't know how to put them in unless they are in the repository.

@molly,
I wrote a howto to install it from git.

viewtopic.php?f=24&t=1261

If you now have 2.7.5 installed you might have all the dependencies already installed.
Don't use --prefix=/opt but use --prefix=/usr.
If you run into problems just holler.
Gerard.

Thank you Gerard.
I did install it in Windows and there are a lot of scripts I can't get to work so I don't know if that would be so in Linux or not. One of them was the Graechon one, picture frame, I do have both scripts installed, wrap-map and picture-frame and I get an error No selection defined. (I tried it with a selection and without one and still get the same message. There were some more that didn't work either

I will look at your instrucs and see what it entails.

I'm kind of astonished at the size of the dev installer. :)
73MB? ... wow!
So i installed it and it uninstalled my gimp-2.6.12 even after i set up a different install location. :lol

Selecting customize allows for a few alterations in the program.
So after i run it i will try and add my other custom files that were in Gimp-2.6.12.
Mainly theme engines and gtkrc folders. :bigthup

Image

Well it copies gimp-2.6 folders and its contents so be forewarned.
1) It uninstalled my Gimp-2.6.12 program, but left all the folders and the Gimp-2.0 directory
2) It copied MY ENTIRE USER/gimp-2.6 directory and renamed it gimp-2.8 but left the gimp-2.6 folders? WHY??
I can't use them anymore.

It loads rather quickly and the splash is nice though. :)

Python works ?
At least you have the option to install it if all the py libraries are in place ?

Yes it actually calls python (according to the pygimp.interp file), from within itself so its self contained.I am guessing that is why its so huge! :)
Older plugins work and i got PSPI working for all of my ADOBE plugins.
I also have themes working in it. :)

Impressionist worked also without having to add the line in the pspirc file

I can not however get Gimp Help manual to load within the program. :hoh

I have not tested my tablet yet.

Hey Guys,

Hi i just installed GIMP 2.8.0-RC1 (WIN) and its realy good,
but the new sliders are shitty :2thd. Is there any way to get the old ones back?
Specally the Brush-Size-Slider is badly configured -> i want the logarithmic scale back.

Need help!

There's no way you can get that back without patching source code.

We briefly discussed log scale and, AFAIR, agreed that it's a good idea. It's just, as far as I can tell, noone actually sat down to implement that.

Is the lack of the log scale the only problem you have with the new widget?

Ok..Thanks!

IMHO is the new slider too big, but i can live with it...
But if you click on the bottom part of the slider,
you get the fine adjustment, I think its a little bit useless (I missclick very often). If i want a specific value, i type it in.
please make the possiblity to turn this of (or to get the old sliders back | i m a creature of habits).

I liked the big button in 2.6 and if i clicked somewhere else on the slider the value changed with decimal steps.
That was very usefull.

Thanks..Yugon

By the way i think there is something wrong with the slider of the fill tool (If you minimize the size of the toolbox window).

please excuse my english...I hope you understand me.

I tried the 2.8 rc today, it's horribly buggy, it has all the same problems that 2.7.6 has, rendering it unusable for me.

I'm starting to think they've just made 2.8 so much bigger and heavier that it just refuses to run well on my computer... even the startup screen takes like 3 times longer than on 2.6.

At this rate though, it looks like I'm stuck with 2.6 for now... :(
