I am now a live user of Fedora 16 and it's running smooth as silk. When 17 comes out I will be making a full installation. I now consider myself entitled to use a penguin as my avatar. The default wallpaper is stunning and the gnome desktop is just what the doctor ordered. :pengy

That's good news. I'm hoping all my fractal programs and Page Plus will run smoothly with Wine, then I might get rid of Windows entirely.

maybe
but i use Xnview and is one of my favorite tool.
here the bad new is that the linux version of xnview really sucks if confronted with the Win one,
BUT the good new is that the Windows version of xnview run very well with wine and support perfectly most of the PS plugin , even in linux

That's a sweeping statement. There is also a XNviewMP
As with anything, it is 'what you use it for'. Remember it is still 'beta', but as with much of linux beta can last a very long time and at the moment XnViewMP is very usable, a good lightweight alternative to say, gwenview and similar that tend to take over your computer. It does not support PS plugins but then I can not think of any linux applications that do.

If you have to have XNview for PS plugins, then by all means install WINE and Windows XNview and if you need access from Gimp, RobA's Shell-out plugin.

That's a sweeping statement.

Mine may sound a too severe statement for a excellent program but my main point was "compared with the windows version"
So "it sucks" is not exact:
the Unix versions are just something very different and in my opinion less powerful and flexible (and for sure less adapt to my and, i suppose ,Erisian workflow)

And is not even correct a confront with other Linux viewer because Xnview is much more then a viewer, i believe a confront may be done only with Irfanview (that also run well with wine )

About the RobA script is very good but i seldom use with xnview, i prefer just drag and drop between the 2 apps

Welcome to the club Erisian.
You might want to try the KDE desktop instead of Gnome.
Gerard.

Thanks Gerard. I've always loved the Gnome desktop ever since I toyed with Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon. I don't know why they dropped it. I don't like their new Unity desktop and I don't like Xubuntu's either. KDE is ok but I do prefer Gnome. Thank you anyway.

Many Linux users don't care much for Gnome3, while others really like it. I am warming up to it, somewhat. For day to day work, I'm still using Gnome 2.x on F14 but I plan on moving to F17 after it's released next month.

Along with Gnome and KDE, Fedora also provides LXDE and XFCE spins so I'll take a look the latest offerings of those too. The nice thing about Linux is you're not stuck with one Desktop Environment.

It's incredibly versatile. I can't get all Gnome features, apparently it's because of my hardware, but it's the desktop I want so I'm sticking with it.

It's always a good idea to have at least two Desktop Environments installed. If one breaks, it's nice to be able to boot into the other to help fix the broken one. :hehe

Don't you use your console for that (ctrl-alt-F1....6)?
If you also install "mc" (Midnight Commander, clone of DOS era Norton Commander) you can browse log files, check configuration files, make files executable etc. etc.
Gerard.

Some day I'm going to get the guts up to make the switch...or at least dual up so I can experiment....I've wanted to abandon windows for years..and all I do is GIMP, Second Life and....yes....I'm a World of Warcrafter :P

Actually bookmarked some websites...if I can figure out which one would be best for me...and...and....grrrr i just so need to do it. :D

<--call me chicken

If you also install "mc"

Sure, I routinely use the console for a variety of tasks and MC is a useful utility but new Linux users normally find it easier to boot to alternate DE when their main DE breaks. They most likely need internet access to get help finding the solution to their problem. Having a alternate DE available is big plus for most users, for a variety of reasons.
