And so I went to check it out. Here's what I found. They look to be about a week old (one still has the umbilical cord attached).

Look to be catish, however the face kinda resembles an otter....but that white marking throws it off....hmmmm....what is this animal? Hmmmm

I thought they were extra furry kittens, maybe wildcats?

I would be interested to know too. That is a lot of fur and it looks quite wiry. As PC says the nails do look quite mature for a newborn.
The faces look a lot like feline but the rest is a mystery.

At first, and from a distance, I too didn't know what they were. But as soon as I picked them up I realized they were kittens. Their fur threw me off too, since it is so wiry (spelling). In terms of how old they are, it was only a guess, but they are quite small and like I said the one still has the remnants of the umbilical cord attached. The photos I took do make them look like a combination of a few different animals, otter included! How funny.

That is great. If you have anymore recent pictures of them, I would love to see how they are progressing. I have never seen them with fur that long at so young an age. Thanks for sharing.

Molly,
As far as I'm able I'll try to post updates, but that will depend upon the mother cat! She apparently didn't like the box and towel I put together for her and her kittens to stay in, so she transferred them (and herself) to an old tire. She seems to prefer living in the slums rather than the Hilton I provided!

Sounds like she doesn't trust you nor does she like to be "caged" inside your home.

Actually, I put the box in the barn since I figured that's where she felt comfortable enough to have her kittens. She's not our cat (we don't know where she came from), and so I knew she wouldn't want to be in our house. Plus, I didn't want to move her from the place she selected.

Hmm might be the "human" scent. Just like many wild animals she might have been afraid of the smell or unfamiliar with it.
Before you know it though you might have a pack (don't know what the cat version of packs is) of cats in there :D

That may be. I know she's used to humans since she does have a flea collar on, but she's definitely not familiar with our scent since we're not her owners. I'm happy she chose our barn though, they've made for some excitement and some more opportunities for using Gimp.

On a side note, several of you commented on the kitten's claws. I found out here ( http://www.petplace.com/cats/developmen ... page1.aspx ) that kittens are all born with their claws extended; they are unable to retract them for the first few weeks. Apparently it helps them move about, and keep them in place when feeding.

oh yes now i remember, little kittens are more stingy because even when they have no intention to use for defense (or for climb on cloths , armchairs and alike) their nails are always extended

I was able to get a picture of the Mama in her new "house". One of the kittens is laying next to her stomach.
