I did some tests and get better ideas.
I propose to work on the file gimprc
It is in this file are grouped the plugins directory, brushes, etc..

The principle would be:
- A special preferences directory is reserved (...\PhotoComix).
- In this directory there are all the plugins, scripts, brushes, etc..
- File "PhotoComix.ini" is created.
- In this file "PhotoComix.ini" we find all the addresses, for example:

[plugins]
dir_plugin_1 = PhotoComix\plugins\_Preinstalled\Astronomy
dir_plugin_2 = PhotoComix\plugins _Preinstalled\Filter_Factory_converter
dir_plugin_3 = PhotoComix\plugins\_Preinstalled\map
...

[brushes]
dir_brushes_1=PhotoComix = \brushes\_Preinstalled\Animated-Artistic
dir_brushes_2=PhotoComix = \brushes\_Preinstalled\VBRr

- It is in this "PhotoComix.ini" file that you can describe the location of the additions.

- A file to start Gimp ( Start_Gimp_Friendly.bat ).

At startup, the utility "maringouin" will read the file "PhotoComix.ini" to create the gimprc.
It will set the whole environment of Gimp.
It will start Gimp.

I hope by tomorrow propose a first test version.

gimprc is just plain buggy in 2.8 (not referring to PC's build). Right now, you can't have user filter and PSPI entries simultaneously. Very strange behavior and I believe it's with GIMP 2.8 itself. If you can fix this issue samj, then I hope you share your fix with the GIMP developers. :)

Bonjour lylejk,

I do not use the file gimprc from Gimp, I'll create this file from the utility "maringouin".
In a first step I will try to run the maximum PhotoComix's additions.

That's cool samj; while you are at it, I hope you have time to compile the updated G'MIC plugin (64-bit) that David just released to fix a bug (do I asketh for too much? lol). :)

Samj your proposal look perfect : :jumpclap

just a question once done a user would be still able to modify the preference path to adapt to his needs ?
(i suppose yes since i could do for mine )

Not sure if is relevant but there were also minor changes that maybe got lost by the faulty remapping or for other reason:

there are additional gimpressionist preset (in a additional preset folder inside gimpresionist in Pref_1, needed by some extra scripts ) and i modify the default for jpg save (raising from 85 to 96, in those times there are more complain attention to quality than to the file size )

i wished also modify the default for gif , changing the default from "merge layers" that i found very unfriendly to "save as animation" (that i believe the more probable reason to use gif format ) but i could not find how to, maybe maringouin" could do ?

A last , but for me more important point, could you set GMIC to save locally the definition files, including that from external filter sources ?

Great idea.
However, it can begin testing in parallel - for 32 bit and 64 bit?

At the request Lylejk subscribe to entire forces.

I only have two more suggestions:
- file *.pot (or *.mo) for "Maringouin" ?
- a choice of different versions of GIMP in "Maringouin"?

Once solved the mapping problem the solution may be applied to both 32 and 64 bit version

Samj knows better , i believe that Maringouin may took care of that too
Alas for the licensing problems i can't directly include PSPI,but should be possible set up the environment in a way that it will work if installed

A utility created by Samj, quite powerful (but i didn't fully understand how it works, as demonstrated from what happened.. :( )

Bonjour,

Some clarification. :
- The preferences directory will be ...\Photocomix and not ...\pref_1
- There may be only a single preferences directory (1 per instance of Gimp).
- We will proceed by steps to correct the details (I do not always understand the problems mentioned on this site).
- "Maringouin" is essentially a launcher for Gimp.
- Changes to the program should run on current versions of Gimp 2.6 , 2.8 (32 & 64 bit)
- It is already possible to choose different version of Gimp by modifying files .ini

***

Sorry but I don't understand this question : file *.pot (or *.mo) for "Maringouin" ?

Just curious - I saw the release of Portableapps.com GIMP Portable 2.8 on their RSS stream a couple of days ago and wonder what if any are the differences in the underlying gimp.exe and whether the work being done here is/could be shared with the Portableapps team?

I'm currently using the 7.6 Windows-Friendly and waiting for the Windows-Friendly 32-bit for my WinXP with pre-installed scripts/plugins etc.

Bonjour,

Here is a first version to test the presence and operation of PhotoComix's extras.

Download :

http://www.aljacom.com/~gimp/gimp_2_8_0 ... 0120509.7z

125 Mo (131 515 392 bytes)

********

Start Gimp by double clicking on " Start_Gimp_Friendly.bat "

********

PhotoComix.ini is the file that contains the mappings.

The contents of this file can be modified according to the wishes of the users to locate resources.

********

@Alec Burgess

I do not know the functioning of the PortableApps launcher.
This version is portable and operates independently.

As I recall, portable apps still requires installation of the launcher; samj's tool is pure no install. Have to admit that I've not used it much since I didn't participate much in the 2.7 beta but played with various versions including compiles from Partha as well as samj's Maringouin build. I still have Partha's 2.7 RGGJAN build for it's extractor ability. Anyway, I digress. Cool to see PC's collaboration with samj has paid off for a new stable build but portable version of GIMP 2.8. Not sure is the User Filter/ PSPI issue has been resolved with this build though but right now, I have no plans (yet) to implement this one since I finally am getting use too (sort of) with the official release. :)

I don't think that is the case. Most (if not all) have an <appname>portable.exe which (often) have a separate splash screen and then run the <appname.exe> as a child. (eg. firefoxportable.exe, thunderbirdportable.exe)

Equivalent to gimprun.exe in the 2.7.6 windows-friendly though the gimprun.exe starts gimp-2.7.6.exe and then exits. If <appname>portable.exe is manually terminated with (say) taskmanager it has no effect on the the application itself which continues to run.

Instead of using the portable apps launcher I just create then drag a shortcut to the <appname>portable.exe to the desktop and/or quicklaunch toolbar.

When the 32-bit Windows-friendly is available I'll "install" both and then do a Beyond Compare folder compare just for "fun".

Ah; didn't know you can run the app without the launcher. Again, I've only dabbled a little with portable apps a few years back and haven't since updating my system to Win7 a few years ago. :)

@Alec

A relevant difference is about support for python plugin, that works out of the box in both Samj and Partha portable version and not at all in the portableapp builds (i didn't test their very last so this refer to the previous )

@Samj
you was really fast..Downloading now

@Samj
it still doesn't work i believe because the preference directory is remained Pref_1
i may well see the other directory but all preferences point to Pref_1

PS i just notice something strange even if i loaded for the first time "open recent files" list all the last images i open with my other
version of gimp

It is possible that this just installed version imported also the preferences , screwing up so all the remapping done ?

I believe a portable version should not import anything from other version

PPS

much less important just a detail and even a bit off-topic
I noticed that in your version there is a Python plugin "borders" that add a new "Python" menu that doesn't contain anything else
In my version i edit that script path to eliminate that Python menu: i doubt of the utility of additional Script fu or Python menu,even more of menu that host a single item, in my opinion that script fit better in the Filters/Decor where i remapped
I also added in the script a comment to report the change of its registration path

Now i saw that Python menu resurrected and that bring that detail back to my attention

I just installed your portable Gimp-2.8 32 bit Sam from your website, and it works perfectly.
I've added
help (as it was an empty directory) - i copied that folder from my existing share/gimp/2.0/ folder into share/gimp/2.0 for your Portable.
All my plugins to Pref-1/Plug-ins
All my scripts to pref-1/Scripts
I copied the mathmap folder from UserFolder/gimp-2.8 to Pref-1
I copied my gtkrc, and all other loose rc and xml files from gimp-2.8 to the Pref-1 directory.
All works well. :)
I suppose now i will add GAP and i am all set with Gimp-2.8
ALL my Adobe (PSPI) plugins work perfectly except of course UserFilter.
Nicely done.

Now if i could just add the new foreground tool from RGGJAN's fork i would be a happy camper! :)

Thanks!
