Thanks Rod. I will hunt down the source so that I can compile it and include it in my next build.

I could email it to you if you like. Already compiled src in it's entirety. :)
You need only make clean and make again. :bigthup

To anyone searching for engine specific settings to edit a theme, here is what I managed to gather for the clearlooks engine, everything is not commented because I'm still testing those parameters:

engine "clearlooks"
  {
#   menubarstyle         = 1               # 0 = flat, 1 = sunken, 2 = flat gradient
#   menuitemstyle        = 1               # 0 = flat, 1 = 3d-ish (gradient), 2 = 3d-ish (button)
#   listviewitemstyle       = 1               # 0 = flat, 1 = 3d-ish (gradient)
#   progressbarstyle     = 1               # 0 = candy bar, 1 = supercandy, 2 = flat
#   sunkenmenubar        = 1
#   radius                   = 5.0            # controls the rounded edges
#   toolbarstyle          = 1
#   animation             = FALSE         # TRUE or FALSE (you must use CAPS else it'll break the code)
#   contrast                = 1.0
#   reliefstyle             = 1
#   style                   = GLOSSY      # GLOSSY (gradient) or GUMMY (subtle gradient) or CLASSIC (default, almost unnoticeable gradient) (you must use CAPS else it'll break the code)
#   colorize_scrollbar    = TRUE            # TRUE or FALSE (you must use CAPS else it'll break the code)
#   scrollbar_color       = "#rrggbb"      #   if you set colorize_scrollbar = TRUE obviously
  }

I found a nice (and working on my OS, win7) tool today, a GTK theme switcher, allowing you to quickly visualize the themes you want to tweak, besides you don't need to be a tech expert to install and use it:

You'll have to download two files at http://sourceforge.net/projects/gtk-win/files/
First, get and install GTK+ Runtime Environment, go to the bin folder (on win7 = C:\Program Files (x86)\GTK2-Runtime\bin) then download GTK+ Preference Tool, extract and cutpaste the gt2_prefs.exe to C:\Program Files (x86)\GTK2-Runtime\bin, execute gtk2_prefs.exe and the theme selector launches !

Now take the themes folders you already have for gimp and place them to C:\Program Files (x86)\GTK2-Runtime\share\themes, take the engines also and place them to C:\Program Files (x86)\GTK2-Runtime\lib\gtk-2.0\2.10.0\engines

Important note: the gimp theme you have probably look like ...\themename\gtkrc but if you want them to work for the theme selector you'll have to change each one so they look like ...\themename\gtk-2.0\gtkrc.

Now, relaunch gt2_prefs.exe to see the result:

A question about the themes.

I have a regular 2.8.6 install and i've been recently testing a "2.8.7" build from Honkel Hatti.

In my version 2.8.6 , i am using the "Small" theme that comes with it instead of the "Default" one, it's making the icons smaller, allowing me to maximise some other part of the interface better.

This theme is still there in Honkel Hatti's build that has the default theme using very dark colors, but if i switch to "Small" everything is still very dark, and in some menu with the text having some odd white halo, it does not help at all with the eye straining on it.

I went to the ...2.8.7GimpDirectory\share\gimp\2.0\themes\Small\ and opened the gtkrc and didn't saw the color defined in there.

I opened the ...2.8.6GimpDirectory\share\gimp\2.0\themes\Small\ and didn't noticed a difference between it and the Honkel Hatti's version.

I opened the gtkrc of some other themes i downloaded and noticed that for most of them, there are colors defined .

I looked into the "Default" theme gtkrc and the other files, but they're no different from the regular 2.8.6, so i can only guess those default colors used by the Default and Small theme are defined elsewhere , anyone know ?
