This seems to be an issue on the Mac itself from my understanding and after googling, the standard advice almost always is to run the Mac disk utility or run in safe mode to see if there are other issues with the machine.

Thanks so much! After permissions repair, Gimp is now starting up just fine. Funny that this did not affect any other applications...

Now to try testing Gimp!

Thanks again for your help, and for all your work on this!

Glad it all worked out. :)

Let me know if you have any other issues.

2-ton you might want to also go into GIMP preferences and allocate a bit more ram to GIMP...not sure how much you have but it usually makes it run a bit smoother if you do that

Maybe you want to add this to the bug-report or I can.

I am not familiar with dual-monitors on a Mac. :(

I've started a new bug report for this issue as it not just about the Open Image dialog; the filter windows open behind the main window as well. In the report I just mentioned this latter issue as I'm not sure if there is one issue or multiple.

I think it's a gtk+ issue rather than McGimp issue.

oh dear, I"ve never done that before and am afraid I'll ruin the whole thing!!!! I'll look at it and see if I get the nerve, lol.
OK looked into preferences and there is no place labeled to allocate more ram, unless it's the tile cache size. How much would one want to add?

is it just me or is it 2.8 -----I was using the rotate tool, and the first couple of times it seemed to go fairly quickly, then it got slower and I even had to wait for the dreaded beach ball to stop rotating every time I used it. Also, how does one close path in 2.8? I tried clicking on the starting point, also tried with shift, with control, and with command. Nothing worked. I hit enter and had the full selection but on the paths dialog it showed I had 4 paths instead of one closed path????

Have you tried hitting "Enter" on the keyboard? Or (being on a Mac :)) hold the command key and click on the first control point. This should close the path.

hitting enter gives me the closed selection, but it doesn't actually close the path...so on the path's dialog there are several path segments instead of one closed path.
I tried holding down the command key while clicking on the first control point. I also tried the same thing using shift instead of command and then tried control instead of command. Nothing closed the path. The only work around I could figure out was to hit enter to get the full selection, then merge all the path segments in order to get one single closed path.

2-ton, take a look at my response. Have you tried to the following? Do command-click on the first control point. This should close the loop.

Edit: OK, so you tried this as well. It seem to work for me. Maybe you have to stroke the path?

Tonight it worked fine. but I had done that yesterday and it didn't work????? perhaps I messed it up by trying too many things one after the other?

anyone know how to get two different finder windows open at the same time .... I want to be able to drag and drop scripts, fonts, gradients, and plug in's from 2.6 into 2.8 if possible.

thanks....and I can copy and paste scripts from 2.8 into 2.8, yay. I was going to do all of them, then decided to pick and choose for now. Macs are supposed to be more intuitive than windows, but I am still finding out how to do stuff in my mac that I learned much faster in windows, but I love my mac. In the year and a half that I have had it, it's not gotten any slower while all my windows computers have always gotten slower and slower. The one we have now is very annoyingly slow even after I have tried all sorts of clean up.
