Sample merge is available for all tools that use sampling in 2.6 and samples from all layers as opposed to just the active layer. This is different from seamless cloning.
Again, I'm a filter guy and usually use these tools for cleanup so I only recently delved into the other cool features of the Clone (and heal) tools and only first noticed sample merge in 2.8. So I'm still a novice when it comes to hands on (as opposed to filter) work in GIMP. lol
Painter I'm not; lazy I am so that means I still have more fractions to learn in GIMP. Enjoy discovering new features still after over a decade using my crutch. Looking forward to seamless clone when it gets released. I already submitted a request for brush wrap a while back but doubt they would ever release this as a feature (i.e., when a brush hit's the edge of the canvas, it will auto-wrap to the opposite edge; this would make creating seamless textures childs play). Still, if seamless clone is similar to this, then I would be happy.
