Greetings!

I've been away for a while, sorry, having some issues regarding past time. *sigh*

Well .. I got this idea stuck in my head but really don't know the how-to's to make go.

I want to make this swooshy motion trail blur that gets larger as it comes around it's curve.

Here's my rough sketch:

I've done straight line motion blurs before but not going from small to large or vice versa. So this is a new one on me!

Here's the original ball which I found a open clip art.

Thanks for any help! I'm really curious about this one!

I would draw it out, than run Iwarp and mess with it till it suits you. Their might be an easier way I just think this is the fastest but I am sure someone will pop in and say something else.

What would happen if you made a path in the shape you want with your bezier tool going towards your soccer ball, fill it with a gradient of your choice, then experiment with the gaussian blur on its own layer.

You could select the ball, copy it to the clip board and use it as a brush with a lower opacity for the motion and also set the spacing to how far you want each to be from each other. The newer gimp 2.8 has a lot of brush dynamics to play around with also.

Here is an example of the fade tapering brush in 2.8

Anything copied to the clipboard is available as a brush in gimp

That is very nice alc, that is what I had in mind but I didn't think of the swirl plug-in. all kinds of ways to skin a cat huh.

Some good solutions but I particularly like Pegleg's idea, I'd put the trail on a seperate layer and fade/blur though to make it look less like a time lapse. Would make a great script with a path and a scale factor as inputs.

I'd like to play with this effect, can I do tapering brush in Gimp2.6?

For this sample I made an alpha brush out of the ball and set the spacing to 14 and did a new dynamic of opacity -fade, size -fade, and angle -direction. There are so many ways you could do things with brushes in 2.8 its amazing. Getting a smear blur would be hard to do but I'm sure there is a way.

How about setting the brush spacing to zero so you don't get that stepped effect, then alpha select the resulting "smear", then either use the opacity/fade settings on the brush or add a layer mask and use a gradient to fade the effect.

After you create the tapered stroke, you can follow with a tapered smudge stroke. Actually tried to do this, but still not exactly what I would envision motion blur to be. Still, maybe with a few other blends this would work. :)

Yeah, there's lots of variables for sure. I'm just waiting for Ofnuts to make the Motion Blur to Path script and the Motion Blur to Selection Script. :rofl :rofl

I stroked a path with an alpha of the ball using the pencil tool, then stroked the path using the smudge tool, then stroked the same path again using the convolve with blur settings and got this.

All the strokes were applied using the Fade Tapering Dynamic in GIMP 2.8. And the blur is all see through since it was made using an alpha channel filled with black.

I'm going to really dive into this when I get back from NY. This weeks been a bit crazy getting ready for this trip. 12 hours of straight driving! Meh!

All those examples look pretty cool!

I think it's sunny in Ofnuts part of the world right now, but a motion blur from a path would be an excellent new tool in the Gimp-2.8 arsenal! :)

Where's the control to change the spacing? I see some of these but not all of the settings. I'm not using a pad, just a mouse. I haven't had a great chance to really familiarize myself with 2.8 100%. Summer time is do do do do do around here. If 2.8 were release when it was still cold out I'd would have found it by now!

A screen shot of that section would be worth a 1000 words!

Convolve? Ok, where's this one? So much hidden stuff!!! :gaah

You will find the edit brushes dialog by clicking it in the top right corner. It is in the default menu in GIMP 2.8 unless you change things around or something. Or you can get to it by clicking the brush and then at the bottom of the pull down there is a shortcut.
Image

And convolve is what the blur and sharpen are called when viewed from the Paint Tool pull down menu of the stroke path dialog box when you are stroking a path.
Image

You can right click a path in the paths dialog box to access the stroke path, or it can be found under the edit menu when a path is highlighted.

@PegLeg Thanks .. got it now!

Um .. quick question! I'm trying to clean up edges using the eraser but it seems it still wants to use dynamics. How do I get this to stop! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
