Kia Ora from New Zealand.

First of all I want to thank the developers for producing such a wonderful program, all for the cost of a donation. I would like to know if gimp v2.8 can be used for photo-indexing (DAM)?

Regards to all,
Jim zl2bmh

Welcome to Gimp Chat. :)

For digital asset management you are better off using XnView. :)
http://www.xnview.com/en/index.html
Which is also available as freeware.

If you are a Linux user, you can also try digiKam, which is OpenSource as GIMP.
http://www.digikam.org

Although they mention that can be installed on Windows and MacOSX, but I do not know about it.

Windows packages -
http://sourceforge.net/projects/digikam/files/digikam/ :)

200 MB download though! And it needs 1 gig of space. (996 MB)

Doc manual can be found here

Because you have to import half of KDE with it as well as most of Qt if you aren't already using them...

This said it's a a very good general purpose program to manage and edit photos. And it can process images in 16-bit mode so ATM that makes it a lot more suited for photo editing than Gimp.

Ohh!
That size must be because in Windows may need to install all of KDE components.
From what I read install KDE on Windows is not very stable.
Anyway usually this is not that way. There are millions of Windows software that GNU/Linux users can not enjoy. The rule is usually OpenSoure can run on any system. Software for Windows, Windows only (and rarely for Mac)
That's why I love the OpenSource :pengy

Edit: I had not read the ofnuts post when I posted my message. I was still translating my message
