Like the the title says.
This happens in "single window mode".
When I fire up Gimp it opens with the tool options window sitting below the toolbox.
Sometimes it stays there for quite a while and allows me to adjust anything that can be adjusted.
Then suddenly when I start painting or clicking a plug-in or script it disappears.
If I'm lucky I'll see a clickable bar in my KDE taskbar that will bring it back.
Otherwise I'll have to go to Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Tool Options.
Needless to say this is quite annoying.

When I run Gimp in "normal" mode with separate windows it doesn't seem to happen AFAIK.
(I set it as large as possible but when I close what I worked on the bottom moves up sometimes).

I wonder if there's a way to nail the tool options window to the wall so it'll stay put?

Have you tried locking the tab Gerard?

Yes I did that.
When you hover over it it says "protect this tab form being moved by the mouse".
I think it'll only protect you for that but not from the program doing it.

This has happened to me as well a couple of times. The options box will just pop out for no reason. I haven't had it disappear, though. The last time I just closed it, clicked the triangle to add the tool options tab, then clicked the triangle again and locked the tab. It hasn't happened again but I suspect it will.
