Just created a 64-bit Ubuntu VM (for Meerkat) and just started downloading the iso file. Not sure if GIMP will run in 64-bit Ubuntu, so posing that question here. I plan on transfering (via shares) everything that I need and deleteing Lynx after I'm happy with Meerkat. Still, if this isn't a wise choice, I can be convinced to just stick with a 32-bit version of Meerkat. :)

I've used the 64 bit version. I didn't notice any differences between that and the 32bit version. Also, most 32bit applications should run fine on it too.

Had to do a few things and just got back. Before I did, though, I did boot the Live CD and it found all (except video of course) drivers. Browsed the web and also played some sounds. Not sure if my GIMP specific plugins will work with GIMP 64 for Linux though (may just keep 32-bit GIMP if it is possible). Don't really use GIMP often in Linux; just a few specific plugins that have no Windows compile (and I rarely use them anyway). Thanks for the info Demen. :)

You'll get a much better performance of Ubuntu running it side by side with Windows, rather than through a VM. I used to use Virtualbox for a long time, and it's handy for those who use it, but when I installed Ubuntu without the VM I was impressed with it's performance.

As for GIMP, it actually runs 100% better on Ubuntu 64 than it does Windows 7. I have yet to crash (knocks on wood) using Ubuntu. Whereas Windows 7, GIMP crashed every single day, sometimes causing me a total loss of work (yes, even with saved files).

But since you're dl'ing Meerkat, all bets are off (at least in my opinion, until something more stable comes forth).

I agree with you about performance Mahvin; I choose the VM route for convenience. Sort of hessitent with MeerKat since I'm not the only one having problems. Anyway, what version of GIMP do you use in Ubuntu 64 (64-bit or 32-bit that is)? :)

OK; the install went alright, but I can't update (won't release whatever (should have made a screenshot; lol). I give up. Deleted the VM. Think I'll wait til the next release and then install the 64-bit version of that. Lynx has been pretty good anyway, so why upgrade (have 3 years; lol). 4.7GByte download (and wasted time when I tried to upgrade Lynx ealier). What a pain. I know; shouldn't vent here (already created a vent thread; lol). :)

I'm updating from the repository, how would I know which version its installing? Going to snoop around a little bit and see what I come up with...

Edit: 64 bit

I also recall this because I had dependency issues when installing PSPI on my machine.

Yeah; remember seeing a thread at the registry. Guess you got PSPI to work in GIMP 64. :)

Yes, PSPI works, but very sparingly, and certainly not worth all the effort that went into getting it to work.

Only half the free filters work in 64 bit, if that. And only two of my "paid for" plug-ins work, which somewhat tipped the balance to being more favorable.

However, the fact that ANY filters/plug-ins work is a plus, not a minus. :) For the most part, you can still use most of the factory filters outside of using PSPI, which sort of makes up for the lack of PSPI working. Honestly, though, how many of us actually USE all those filters?

Then there is WINE. Which I also use for 3 Windows standalone plug-ins. One of which is the rain and snow being offered under the "Cool New Program" thread here at GimpChat. :hi5
