:) Cool Oregonian :)

Mathmap has 3 options to create spheres,
1 most obvious Map/ Sphere
2 Animated Sphere , it has a quite different type of mapping .(.try with equirectangular images :wh )
3"Rectangle2Ellipsoid:
if the source image has 1:1 ratio the result is a Sphere
(but you may like use twice...the result of a sphere mapped to a ellipsid is... :cool
(and has also a animated version too ...)

If disturb you just delete that code )

I'll get those filters and see what I have to do to use them. LATER: Where to those filters go? They have mm and mmc extensions. I will be using the Linux ones.

Well I had to at least try the gold environment map on these. Interesting results. I like the touch of color in them. I duplicated the layers, desaturated the bottom one and used curves to make more contrast and used them for the bumpmap.

Desaturated everything on this one. All gold.

Did you get a 1.3.x version ?

if so you have also the Composer tab..the composer allow also to create new filter by "chaining" 2 or 3 or more filters,
those composite filter may be saved with the extension mmc
The other instead have mm extension and they will work also on previous version of MM

Before i say that may be interesting run Rectangle2ellipsoid twice...well ad example that could easily become a new mmc filter
Note that is not needed to wrote code for use the Composer...you "compose" graphically

here a example to clear

Image

as you see there are few tecnichal term, most easy to understand :
Util-ident is the first step, is a utility filter that send as input a image identical to the active layer (or the selected part of it if was a selection ),ready to be processed

in-outstand for Input-Output where the output of a filter may become the input of other filter(s)

and finally comp_over: Composition Over meaning that will be the end result , the final output

note that you may also save that composition as a new filter just clicking the Save as button

But Mark explains more clearly all the magic of that tool, here you may found all details and even a video
http://www.complang.tuwien.ac.at/schani/mathmap/

about were to save the codes you should have i believe in the gimp folder in your user directory aMathmap folder and ,inside a another folder called "expressions "
well..there...you may move the subfolder i zipped, or move the content in some of the existing folder (as example if you don't like 2 menu for Map filter as Map and Extra_Map ...move all the Extra_map codes in the Map subfolder )

.ABout submenu a important advice...just forget all that submenu and entries you will see in Filters/Generic/Mathmap
Use Only Filters/Generic/Mathmap/Mathmap
..is almost buried by all other entries but is the only that give you full access to the real thing....i know sound weird but you may check by yourself the difference
Only Filters/Generic/Mathmap/Mathmap give you access to all the filter and to the complete GUI (and to the composer if you wish try it )

This is the folder I put those files in? All of them? /usr/share/gimp/2.0/mathmap/expressions

yes
you may move the codes in the folders that are already there (inside "Expressions" )
or you may move the folder that directly contain the codes

to organize your filters you may even rename or create new folders (as example "Favorites") if you wish

I'm just going to leave the folder as is. Don't want to mess with them.

I don't know what version I have of MathMap. Here's a screenshot of the plugin browser. Is that number I have marked with red down by the date the version number?

The latest version of the repository listed in your repository list

From the MM developer repository (i already give you the link above) last packge for Fedora is 1.3.5.(and that is out from 1 year or more!)

I will just try to install the package for fedora 11 but, to be on the safer side you may ask here

http://groups.google.com/group/mathmap

It is even possible that Mark Probst the developer use Fedora...

I googled it for the Fedora 12 version and when I look at the package it's still v1.2.4.

official distro repository are often behind at least till few time ago some was proposing version 2.4 as last for gimp.
That do not exclude that developer's packages could be more updated.

I believe the rpm of 1.3.5 may work fine on the last Fedora

BUT you may prefer get a more official confirm so check for replies here , below

well that was a simple variant of a double spiral i already had

BUT you may use the gradient tool to create simply but cool and smooth shapes (concentric circles and squares, spyrals, parallel lines ):
In the Gradient tool dialog chose the shape ...and then set "repetition" to sawtooth or triangular waves

(you may wish have also dithering and supersampling checked there )

And if after you rescale asymmetrically the result ( changing the image ratio ) you may also get concentric ellipses or rectangles
