I like the new version, YAFU. Can you post another version and drop the background? With a transparent background, the higher color .png that's already there will show through your animated .gif. :bigthup

i want to make one and submit it. but i am not really sure if i am right on how to do it...1st, how do i make sure my banner is seamless and will work with the website...and 2nd, so am i right as long as i make my banner 930px wide and 200px tall then i will be ok...and 3rd, i can save my picture with a jpg file or a gif file and it will work right..and 4th, once i make my picture, all i need to do to submit it, is to post a picture of it here....i hope i have it all right....if not, please someone let me know...

(1) You need to use the existing xcf templates here. Option#1, you would a transparent background and the horizontal divider to make it seamless. The bottom horizontal divider is required and should remain fixed in it's position. In xcf option #2 , you use vertical dividers on each side, as well as the horizontal divider on the bottom, with your banner between. The horizontal divider is fixed but you can move the vertical dividers out toward the edges more to make more room for you banner. Just remember to leave the last few pixels, to the left and right of the vertical banners, transparent, so it will flow properly and integrate with the website.

(2) The entire banner should be 930x200, including the required transparent background & dividers.

(3) The image should be a PNG.

(4) You can upload the image or attach the image using the upload attachment section below the submit button in each post.

To make things simple, you can just create a banner 900x180, any style you like, and I'll border it with the default blue dividers. :cool

Let me see if I understood. Do you mean to remove the entire background? The layer called "website sliver"?

I see imperfections in this new, and I do not know why. Also the shadows are opaque. When I save as gif I used the "replace" option because it images overlapped if I did not choose that option.

I had made a small correction in background, in the pencil behind wilber nose:

YAFU, I just meant drop the layers named "background" and "gradient", at the bottom of the original xcf. You'll need to keep everything else. The style overlays the banner over the background & gradient anyway, so keeping it is redundant. In your case, since you're using a .gif and the website uses a .png for the background, it should look much nicer when you drop out the background and gradient in the .gif, which will allow the png that's already on the website to show though.

Oh, I've been very stupid! I have combined the last 4 layers in the original, and I used it as a base for the gif images.
Give me some time to correct that.

Tux the banner you have isn't the one I wanted to submit. Anyway these are the two below, whichever is best of the two.

I'm stuck here. Apparently there are shadows in each layer. But when I save as gif, shadows disappear (in transparent areas):

YAFU, if you want to keep all the shadows when using .gifs, you'll need to semi-flatten. Layers/Transparency/Semi-Flatten.

See this thread..

viewtopic.php?f=23&t=214

Molly, I add that one to the rotation. :bigthup

I warned you that I had no experience with animations :) . Thanks to you and to Oregonian for de tutorial.

Here I used "semi-flatten" in each layer. And then I saved the gif with "replace" option (using "combine" I continued having problems)
By using "semi-flatten" a white background has been added behind the shadows. I do not know if the animation will look fine with a background behind the gif.

YAFU, I've put up the transparent animation and it looks good. The issues we saw on each side of the old gif banner are now gone. There was a little extra white on the left side of the gimp tools box in the BG but I erased that.

Molly, your bubbles banner is up. The horizontal divider bar was all the way to the bottom so I raised it up so it would overlay properly with the existing background. Attaching the tweaked xcf.

Thankyou for the kind and sincere apology AnMal. I understand. All is forgiven.
I tried to send you a Private Message but your settings do not permit it.

YAFU
Your animated Banner is incredibly fantastic !!!! So clever and innovative.
I am so impressed YAFU!

RE: Animated Banner
What if you add a bit of CSS so that the Banner is static... but when you hover it then it will display the animation.
Then it won't be distracting or annoying.
There would have to be 2 Banners submitted. A static one and an animated one.
Something like this:

#logodesc
{background-image:url("STATIC BANNER IMAGE INSERTED")!important;}
#logodesc:hover
{background-image:url("ANIMATED BANNER IMAGE INSERTED")!important;}

That is an option but even then, some animated banners might still be annoying.

2 wouldn't have to be submitted, I could just grab a frame from the one.

Another option would be onmouseover in HTML or Javascript.

I would prefer a static PNG for the banner. The image quality is much higher and there are no issues with the kinds of large file sizes that can occur with animated .gifs.

I do like YAFU's animated banner, though. It's not too large and it's clever. :hehe

Been fooling around with my previous image and came up with three alternatives. (Needed more metal :hehe )

The third one may be too busy and I guess I could always tone down the light burst. Here's all three anyway. Opinions welcomed.

Those are great, Drac. I think I like the 2nd one on the list best. :bigthup

I'll put it up on the rotation theme so you can check it out.

maybe i would get rid of a few of those brushes, like everything from Wilbers nose to the left
think that would look better
