do you make desktop wallpaper in gimp, and if you do what do you make? what styles do you prefer?

i love making wallpaper, i love the feeling of being greeted by something i made myself when i open my laptop. i prefer changing styles all the time, so i try to make all kinds of styles.

here's my latest six!

1. made from scratch using the gradient tool with the same gradient in different ways.
2. made after a tutorial. i want to make a desktop calendar out of wallpapers for next year and this is the first sketch.
3. made using stock photos. i wanted to illustrate a quote i found.
4. the fire effect on the paisley is from a tutorial, the background was experimented up with a few tips from others.
5. & 6. these were made using stock textures and my own blob paisleys and i think i made fortythree backgrounds with those paisley blobs because i love them too much to throw any of them away - have now cleaned up in the folder and narrowed it down to twentytwo.

I like those, especially the paisleys. I used to play around with wallpapers but I haven't done any in ages.

i like your first one best, AnMal
the pinkish red colors are right up my alley

the green striped grungy one would be my second choice

I've made a few wallpapers from photos I've taken but have never designed one from graphics renders.

I tend to rotate wallpapers. Since it's football season, here's my current one. :fg

Here's a recent one I made in several colors using a seamles-tileable pattern I made from scratch. No composition, just the pattern with a shadow.

erisian: thank you! no doubt it's more than obvious by now that i'm a bit paisley-obsessed, so i have to agree that the three paisley ones are the best. normally, the top left one would take an easy second place because that's my colours, but quite unexpectedly i fell really hard for that striped one. it works so well on the screen, it has a sort of cosy retro feel and it makes me think of ice cream :).

esper: that picture has a lot of atmosphere, i can imagine it looks good on the screen. the colours in the top left one are a treat - i use that gradient for almost everything i do.

GnuTux: i'm very ignorant about football, but if you tell me that team is good i'll take your word for it :). as a picture it's a bit strange, though, isn't it?

(this was really fun! more wallpaper posts please! but you could of course stop ninja-ing me...)

draconian: that one is lovely! hex patterns are a great favourite, so i can live with the simple layout :).

Very nice Tux. Gosh, football back again so soon, that means winter is on it's way.

I use to live in Carmel in the 70's and Hawaii in the 80's; this one helps me remember.

I have never made wallpaper, nor used wallpaper...I just use the default desktops. Mostly because when I turn on the computer, I go directly online or into a program, I really don't look at my screen so a wallpaper would never be seen but for an instant.

:kpix keep them coming, please, it's so much fun seeing all the different styles :)!

odinbc: sunsets and palm trees aren't supposed to be my thing, but who could help loving that picture?!

b10h4z4rd: aaah, star trek wallies! i have trekker friends who would love those.

2-ton: that's a very practical approach :). i seem to see a lot of my screen though - maybe because i keep jumping between programs and tasks all the time. having just the default background would feel like living in someone else's home.

he4rty: they're impressive, he4rty! the gimp paper is so elegant. i love the one with the quote from matthew on it best though, i like the depth in it and i really should have put that quote on my screen ages ago, i know i need the reminder.

AnMal, perhaps I am just lazy and uncreative, lol. Actually I just don't have time to play around that much and I find the defaults quite sufficient for my needs. I do like my Snow Leopard wallpaper, I could never make anything better anyway. On my pc, I have always just kept the blue windows paper because I have so many icons on it, it was busy enough without pics. I use my desktop a lot as a temp storage, so it's usually pretty cluttered. Especially on the mac, I find the file system foreign and need to use the desktop so I can use files I am working on easier.

Right now I'm using one that I made for the place I volunteer, based on their website. I have it on so I can look at it and make adjustments. All the have now is that horrendoud dell blue styrofoam looking thing. I made this one to personalize their computers.

My normal one I didn't make but modified, I know, that's a low down trick but it reminds me of my daughter.

paynekj: i love pictures of mushrooms - the more brown and wormeaten, the better :) wish i was a
better photographer, then more of my photos might end up on the screen.

[color=#004080]gms9810/color]:you know, all is fair in love and wallpapers :hehe . i like the one you made yourself though, it's like a real wall from someone's living room.

I like yours b10h4z4rd. It reminds me of an idea of mine to have a fully functional virtual synthesizer on my desktop. I think I'd have to create my own OS for that though.

Kevin - please be a little sensitive - I'm mycophobic. :scram
