Makes me look very old (No comments Lyle :hoh ) but I used selections-paths-selections to create this. The canvas texture was created using the script from here. http://www.gimpchat.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=5199 converted to a gradient, desaturated duplicated and rotated 90 degrees and put in multiply mode.

i'm full of questions. is this a painting or a fake painting (meaning using a photo?) how do you use selections-paths-selections to fake a painting? and of course, are we all invited for your hundredth birthday bash next week? :scram

(btw, cretive use of that script, i think)

That's an interesting effect. It could be used with the dark brown right side replaced with another version of your picture or something completely different like flowing thoughts (music, flowers, numbers, beach, sky, trains, planes, automobiles etc.)

Er - 99th AnMal! :hoh It helps to use threshold but I didn't. Create selections of various value ranges using select by colour on your photo and convert them to paths. On separate layers convert each path to a selection and flood fill with varying greys. Make your photo and background layer invisible and merge visible layers. Make all layers visible then experiment with layer modes, saturation etc.

Excellent thinking Odin. :)

Not as much work as creating Celtic Knots!

Don't encourage me. I've still got my knot paths saved and I will tweak. :hehe

:hehe you're not the only one. those paths made from selections that tutorialgirl uses make it very elegant and very exact and if you're a very messy person by nature you just need a bit more mess in your knotwork.

he he he.

I will say that I like the almost vexel result. The canvas texture needs to go though (or is it a way to hide the wrinkles. ;) ). :)

AnMal - I make a mess when I'm trying to be precise. I tried to make a selection from one of my knot paths and it was all over the place. I ended up having to stroke the path then fuzzy select the outside of it to get a reasonable selection.

Lyle - :hoh :hoh :hoh - I'm English and I've never in my life heard the word vexel. Please explain or I'll take it as an insult. :hoh

hmmm, gimp already has a way to apply a picture to make it look like it is on canvas....just go to Filters>Artistic>Apply Canvas...and it will bring up this pop up screen...

Image

and then you can change your settings. here is a example of how it can look ....

Image

so i guess i was wondering why you would need to download the script you used?...just asking..

that does sound messy :). i was ready to start crying when i was nearly finished with the paths of my second knot and zoomed out and saw that two of the outer paths had broken loose somehow and i had no idea how to put them back.

Partly it was an accident. I never intended to use the script that way. Also I like to find other ways of doing things. Also, oils and acrylics are thick enough to cover canvas texture so in a real painting you won't see it anyway - it's just a digital gimmick.

AnMal - an artist who doesn't cry occasionally isn't an artist. :)

A vexel is the bitmap editor's way of faking a vector. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vexel

great work, i love it ! :P

its true, it makes you look old because the colors make the corners of your mouth and eyebrows appear to hang down, but this is because parts of the colored selections look and act like shadows

i was wondering if you could achieve the same effect with posterize

also you could make a (multilayer) stencil from your work (if you simplified it some more), and then cut and spray it
im a big fan of stencil graffiti !

I don't think you would have as much control with posterize. Graffitti...

GMS - sorry, I haven't been able to replicate the effect very effectively.
