Hi there,

I'm using aljacom maringouin portable version.
Sometimes, not at every reboot, my user prefs (set to overwrite at exit) actually save prefs I've never used, most of the time, when I reload gimp, tools like clone, pen, gradient, brush and others show up with mode screen or multiply and an opacity 50 activated. And I swear I don't close gimp with these settings activated, so my gimp kind of save at exit things that doesn't exist.. (please, don't tell me that my gimp acquired self-consciousness :D)

There is a set of Tools settings for each pointer device, e.g., mouse, tablet, and if you have a tablet with reversible stylus, one for each side of the stylus. Would that explain it?

I do have a tablet but as I wired the stylus maybe like two times past year.. hmm no, I don't think there would be a connection.

If by that statement you mean (see below)

Then if during your session, you run scripts/filters, they may leave tool options set.

You must move your gimp portable in a folder and in along a path without blanc spaces
Maringouin doesn't support well paths with embedded white spaces or dots

At least i stumbled on similar problems (my preference reset to default )testing my modified version (that is assembled over samj portable ) and that was the culprit.

As for the solution first take care that your gimp is in a folder without blanc spaces or even dots in the name (so "gimp_2_8_2" is fine, "Gimp-2.8.2" may be risky, for the dots ) then just move directly in C ( or D or as is your drive is called)
..or move on a path without blanc spaces or dots in the name

PS
you may also modify manually the preference file (it is just a text file very readable ,"#" as beginning make the line inactive ,a comment line, remove the "#" make the line active, and allow to change the corresponding default in preferences )
I modified the gimprc file in gimp_2.8.x\etc\gimp\2.0 to preserve my preferences , if not went lost if moving gimp in a different place

I've noted the possible curse with our scripts/filters !

My gimp was indeed in a path where there are blank spaces, I've removed them, we'll see what happens in some days, thanks !

Glad you solved
Maybe Partha found a solution to eliminate the problem from future version, i am just sending a PM to Samj so she could test it.

Do you know where the preference file would be found in Kubuntu 12.04?

In all *nix OS's it'll reside in /home/username/.gimp-2.8 (or 2.6).
If you use Konqueror or Dolphin set it to show "hidden files".
You won't find a file named "preferences" in there though.
It contains directories like /brushes and a lot more.
The directories are not touched when you edit preferences.
There are text files in there like "sessionrc" which is rewritten every time you shut down gimp.
If you're having problems you can try delete "sessionrc" while gimp is not running.
The file "gimprc" contains your preferences.
Gerard.

as Gerard says
there is more then a gimprc file in gimp, let say there is one "global" in ...etc/gimp/2.0 and that in the user directory indicated by Gerard.

I can't imagine much reasons to edit manually the preference file it is easier do the same with gimp loaded from Edit /preferences.

I did edit but only because i wanted share a modified version of gimp, and to use a updated gimp Help and make it works out of the box was needed change a default in preference...but that was to solve a Windows only problem

I'm having a problem with the settings associated with my stylus. It's gotten stuck on a color and a brush I don't need as the default, as what GIMP opens with. I've tried setting the color and brush to what I need, and then going into preferences and "save tool options now." It doesn't fix this problem. I have the option to save tool options when GIMP closes disabled.

This thread is marked solved Jeremy_Ray.
You'd better start a new thread.
Can't you change the brush and color after you fire up Gimp?
In my earlier post I explained what is saved when you shut down Gimp.
Gerard.

As default all brush tools (so including eraser, airbrush, dodge-burn convolve ) have shared option,
If you have the option on , the preference of 1 tool will be modified inderectly if changing that of any other brush tool

The first thing i do after installing is enter in preferences/tool to correct that, un-check the box with that option
Because the best brush for the brush tool will seldom be the best also to erase ,, or convolve, or airbrush.

Not sure is this may be relevant for your problem, for sure if you are not aware to have switched on the option to force several tools all to the same default , try to change defaults may give headaches
