dont know what to call it

he4rty´s Artex patterns inspired me to try something as seen in the stage set design of the spaceship Nostromo's interior from the movie 'Alien'

first try didnt work out, because of rounded edges, growing selections and pixelation

then made something simpler, bump mapped and build the rest around it

im not very happy with it, but too moody to do more work, so i post it

I like the overall result. Kind of a techno look. I think some drop shadows on the elements of the top layer would help immensely as long as they are offset enough and maybe like 50% or so to give it even more depth. Great composition (again), wish I was that creative.

thanks Draconian, big compliment

a dropshadow you say ?
hmm, thing is, i cant really decide what the whole design really is
the original idea wasnt really to make it like multiple layers floating on top of each other, if that makes any sense

Very cool!
What technique did you use for the blue 'pipes'?

thanks Cyrilshark !

the turquoise ones or the blue diagonal stripes ?

the turquoise lines:
i started with this element, duplicating, arranging and trying things out

i ended with something that had two layers full of this element, one rotated by 90°
i filled it with red and it looked a bit like asian characters, but didnt use it

when i needed a texture i alpha selected the shape, shrank by 2 and deleted so i got these lines
(i think i inverted the selection, dont remember exactly)

locked the alphachannel to paint over with turquoise, duplicating and then recolor in a darker blue, put it underneath and offsetted by 2px so it looks less flat

layered a few of these elements and erazed parts of it

the blue stripes
where done with a rectangular selection (rounded edges) filled with the 'Warning!' pattern
changed the colors to blue and got rid of the white with color to alpha
there are three layers:
the original, a blurred one, and one with motion blur
the outline is done with alpha selecting the text, growing by two and deleting from the stripe layers

I love it. Makes me want to start pushing buttons and pulling levers to see it in action except I can't find them. :hehe

:hehe
thanks Oregonian !

im not very much interested in creating realistic looking 3D scenery, im more of a bricolage guy
i dont even think im a very creative person, what im good at is seeing ideas in other peoples work and putting them together in a new context, that is me

before the internet, i used to buy magazines and collect every single snippet that i found interesting and filled countless binders with this stuff

now i do the same with pics found on the internet and i have a huge collection of stuff that caught my eye
the downside is, i dont use it as much as the physical thing
thats the big disadvantage of living in the digital age for me

the piece i did uses ideas from Alien and Prometheus

You certainly created a cool image. I think you show a LOT of creativity. Making images is an act of creation so don't discount yourself.
